Expert Reviews

From the Editorial Team

The Surge MasterCard is one of the only unsecured credit cards available to consumers with poor credit. That means you don’t have to put down a security deposit to get approved, and you don’t have to pre-load your own funds onto the card. However, since this card is available to consumers with poor credit, there are a number of costly fees that you should be aware of. First off, the annual fee for the first year is $125, and after that, it becomes $96. Secondly, there is a monthly maintenance fee of $10 per month, or $120 annually that kicks in after the first 12 months of holding the card. Those charges can add up pretty quickly, but since you don’t have to put down a security deposit you get to save a large chunk of money upfront. The ongoing APR is 29.99%, so it would be wise to pay your balance off in full each month to avoid interest charges. Overall, this card could be a useful tool to build credit if you can’t get approved for many other credit card, but you need to consider the cost of the numerous fees and make sure it’s the right decision.

The Bottom Line

Since people with poor credit have limited options in terms of which credit cards they can get approved for, the Surge MasterCard is a nice option to have that doesn’t require a security deposit. But the fees can be costly, so it’s important to understand what you’ll end up paying.

The Good

This card is available to almost every kind of credit profile. Unlike prepaid cards, the Surge MasterCard reports to the credit bureaus, so you use the card responsibly, your account activity with help you build your credit score.

The Not so Good

The fees associated with this credit card are some of the highest in the industry. Also, the APR of 29.99% is extremely high, but that’s pretty typical on credit cards for consumers with poor credit.
