I never had a credit card until My brother told me I should build up mu credit some how because I will need it if I ever need a loan . I live on very little income back when I got my credit it was even smaller a lot smaller. I tried 2 places to get a credit card and one turned me down and the second gave me one. I was so happy and scared because I was afraid ,I never owed anybody anything except my usual bills and I had my house already paid off. Everything was always paid on time. Well they took a chance with me and I have done very well with them. Never regretted getting one.

I had credit cards back in 2000, paid them off and never owned another credit card. I paid cash for everything. One day, I was looking to buy a car and filled out application, I was denied. Not because I had bad credit, because I had no credit since 2000. The financial manager told me to apply for 2 credit cards and to always pay on time, never be late. Once creditors see you making your payments on time and never late, you will achieve good credit. My credit score in 2013 was 529, from 2014 till current my credit score is 749. It is important to have credit, it is more important to be responsible and discipline yourself at the same time with credit cards.

Which card should I apply for to pay off other cards that have high balance and high interest? Any suggestions if credit is good!

By: CompareCards | Oct 30, 2015

Hi Debbie,

The Chase Slate is an excellent credit card to use for transferring a balance from a high interest credit card. It offers no balance transfer fee for transfers made within the first 60 days, as well as no annual fee and 15 months with 0% APR.

Another great option is the Citi Simplicity which comes with 21 months of 0% APR and no annual fee, although it does have a 3% transfer fee.

is it worth getting a credit card with the traveling point perks ? I've never used points for travel but I would like to have that benefit.. Bank of America travel rewards offers 20,000 bonus points when you open an account.. Is that a lot ? Also about the 0% APR for interest rates.. what happens if you make a late payment. Does it get nullified?

By: CompareCards | Oct 27, 2015

Hi Caterina,

Travel rewards credit cards can be an excellent tool to help you save money on travel. If you use them right, then it's pretty easy to save hundred of dollars per year on plane tickets an hotels! The BankAmericard Travel Rewards is a great option, and like you mentioned it offers 20,000 points for new cardholders who spend $1,000 in the first 90 days. Those 20,000 points equal $200 in travel!

The intro APR is another nice feature, but if you're going to use a credit card for the rewards, it's best to always pay the balance off in full. Making one late payment won't cause you to loose your rewards, but if your account becomes delinquent with payments going unpaid for a long period of time, then you might lose your points.

By: Lois Stein | Oct 27, 2015

I have a travel card with United Airlines. They do not charge you for the first suitcase. The problem that I found with this card is that you can't use your miles for any trip that you want. I was flying with my son to Florida from Grand Rapids, Michigan. His flight was paid. I tried to use my mileage on the same flight and was told that I couldn't. I was quite angry and told the person to whom I was speaking......"I am being penalized because I want to use my mileage." There are seats available on the flight. I explained that my son was on the flight and we were going to Florida together. After quite a battle, I was finally able to use my mileage. They charge a large sum to have the credit card. I am sure that if you make a late payment, they will bump you up to the exorbitant interest rate.

By: Whit Buvea | Nov 2, 2015

That depends on your payment and travel preferences. That 0% is only an introductory rate. The regular interest rate is 15-23%. If you make a late payment, that bumps you to the next interest rate category. So you can easily go from 15% to 23% in one shot, depending on the credit company's procedures. As far as travel is concerned, it's best to pick a card with no blackout periods or other travel restrictions. I had a card where mid-October to mid-January dates were ALL blacked out, as well as spring break and most of summer. With the other blackout periods, you were restricted to only 6 months of available travel dates.

By: | Oct 21, 2015

If you pay up each month then you don't have to worry about interest.

By: Tom Jensen | Oct 27, 2015

Exactly: Credit Cards should be treated as Cash. If you cannot pay them off each month then you shouldn't use them at all. Use them to reap the Rewards but pay the balances off each month.

Here's one. After the 0% introductory period, does that past unpaid interest get added back onto the principal?

Hi Claude,

None of the card you see here on this page will retroactively charge interest after the introductory period of 0% APR is finished. That practice is called "deferred interest" and it is definitely something to look out for. We've written a blog about deferred interest, so you can find out more information here.

You will typically only find deferred interest on store credit cards that are used to finance big, one-time purchases. Be sure to check out out low interest credit cards page for all the best options with 0% APR!

How can I use my card to pay mortgage and earn more miles. I currently use it for everything, (gas, groceries - anyplace that takes CC) and pay it off every month. Any tips?

Hi Maggie,

Unfortunately, there is no free way to pay your mortgage with a credit card to earn rewards or miles. This is a common question among people who enjoy credit card rewards, but as a general rule, you cannot pay off any kind of debt by acquiring more debt. While some 3rd party websites, like ChargeSmart.com, may technically allow you to pay other bills with your credit card, they usually charge an exorbitant fee that will almost always outweigh any rewards you will earn on the transaction.

You nice people are making many fine suggestions to the people asking questions. Now how do I eliminate those annoying telephone calls from Cardmember Services which calls me once or twice a week asking me if I have a credit card with a balance I'd like to transfer. Every time I try to talk to them about the annoying calls they hang up. Almost every call message includes the warning that this is my final call offering their balance transfer offer. If only that were true! Take care.

Call this phone number from each phone that you do not want to receive promotional calls from: 800-382-1222. This is the "Do Not Call List Registry". Within 30 days, you'll stop receiving those calls. Then, you should not receive any promotional calls for one year. When you start getting those calls, again, you have either signed up for something that opens the flood gates, or it has been one year. Time to make that call, again.

Hi Diane,

If you have bad credit, you'll probably have to start with a secured credit card. A secured card works just like a normal credit card, but you have to put down a refundable security deposit to get approved. The Capital One Secured MasterCard and the Discover it® Secured are both great options.

Diane I would suggest Capitol One. Their approval rate is pretty good. It is definitely a Excellent card to start with. And also Credit One.

My credit is terrible, but I was able to start with a 350 dollar credit line from Capitol One. I made all my payments on time, and they raised my limit. I still make sure all my payment are on time, and I have received more credit card offers. But since I am retired, I am very careful to not over extend myself......

How are you supposed to get a credit card when you have bad credit and all the cards require excellent/good credit? How are you supposed to live? Tracy A. Queen, Lizella, Ga

Hi Tracy,

While it's true that the best cards require applicants to have a good credit score, there are still a number of credit cards available for people with poor credit. Click the link to see all the options!

I don't understand about your comment "How are you supposed to live"? Credit or Charge cards are not an answer to making your life any fuller. Credit/Charge cards should be treated as cash. If you don't have the cash to pay off the balances each month then don't use them. If your credit is bad then get your credit reports free at annualcreditreport.com and try to fix it.

I would like a credit card that offers at least 50,000 to 75,000 at an interest rate of 3% or less. The special offers I receive in the mail from companies offer almost that amount but state could go as low as 5.99. I do not want that offer. I want what I can handle and would be better for my way of life.

You could not handle the payment if they gave you 50 to 70 thousand because the interest rate would be sky high if you were going to pay for a better way of liif. The way to begin is to get a good credit card Use it,pay it OFF, use it again, Pay if off,you are building better credit that way.YOU must not t be a late payer.

You should never be concerned about interest. Get the Credit Cards that give you the best rewards back. Credit Card companies make money every time you swipe that card. All credit card balances should be paid off each month. If you don't have the cash to pay off all your balances each month then don't use them. I use mine in lieu of using cash each month, reap the cash back and then pay off the balances throughout the month.
