Is getting a MasterCard or Visa with a 13.50% APR for purchases realistic for me at this time? My FICO score has run in the 760s for the past year. My credit monitoring service says I've only used about 30% of my available credit but FICO says 30% is too high of a usage. I CAN get a MasterCard or Visa--but I've returned (closed) at least two cards so far because the APR for purchases was around 22%.

Hi Jack,

With a score of 760, your credit is considered excellent and you should be able to get approved for some of the best balance transfer credit card offers. If you're looking for a long intro APR, the Citi Simplicity is a great choice, but if you'd rather have a low ongoing interest rate then check out the Barclaycard Ring MasterCard which has 8.25% APR.

Hi Shawn,

The best way to pay off your balance quickly is by using a balance transfer credit card. Cards like the Chase Slate, Citi Simplicity, or BankAmericard Credit Card offer 0% APR for a long period of time which can help you pay down the principle of your balance and avoid those high interest charges.

What is the difference between the Barclay card and Capital One? Also I keep getting Capital One and Credit One letters. Who is Credit One? Is it any better?

By: CompareCards | Jan 25, 2016

Hi Obietta,

Capital One and Barclaycard are two separate credit card issues. There is no relation between the two banks. Credit One Bank is another credit card issuer that specializes in credit cards for consumers with poor credit.

Hi Charlene,

When deciding on the best credit card for emergencies, you should looks for the cards with low interest rates and the fewest fees. Two great options to consider would be the Barclaycard Ring MasterCard or the Citi Simplicity.

Hi Jesse,

To qualify for credit cards with the terms you described, you typically need to have good credit. If you think your score is at least in the upper 600s, you may be able to get approved for the Chase Slate card, which has 0% APR for 15 months and no annual fee.

not so great of credit cards available for rebuilding credit?

By: CompareCards | Jan 21, 2016

Hi Lisa,

If you're trying to rebuild credit, you may need to start with a secured credit card. A secured card works just like a normal credit card, but you have to put down a refundable security deposit to get approved. The Capital One Secured MasterCard and the Discover it® Secured are both great options.

By: R Jo Pitts | Jan 23, 2016

Capital One has many cards available and they are easy to work with.

Throughout most of my life I always paid my bills on time. But now, after some setbacks , health problems, etc., my credit rating has gone from great to lousy. What's a good , low interest card to use for rebuilding?

By: CompareCards | Jan 21, 2016

Hi Jazherah,

If you have poor credit, it is not likely that you will be able to get approved for a low interest credit card. One option to consider is the Capital One QuicksilverOne.

0% Credit Cards & Interest Free Credit Cards

Low interest rate (or 0%) credit cards can save you hundreds of dollars on balance transfers and on routine purchases carried over as credit card balances. Or you may simply want to be rewarded with a preferential interest rate as acknowledgement for good credit history and responsible debt management. Whatever your goals or motivation, zero percent or low interest credit cards can help you maintain the lowest rates available to individuals with excellent to good credit. You can find out more about credit score here.

Keep in mind that there are two main categories of low rate credit cards, namely those that offer a Variable APR and those that give you a Fixed APR.  Just like with variable versus fixed rate mortgages, a fixed rate APR will remain relatively stable through the course of the loan. If your card company decides to raise it – which is somewhat rare – they will first notify you of that change according to Federal law requirements. With a variable rate, your APR is tied to a prevailing rate such as the Prime Interest Rate. If the prime rate increases then your APR will most likely follow in a similar fashion.

Generally speaking, credit card companies and banks will extend either 6 or 21 month offers – within the 0% to 3.99% annual interest rate range. That can generate a considerable discount when normal APRs are averaging around 15% or higher. Once the introductory promotional period expires, the APR on a low interest credit card or interest free credit card may revert to the regular interest rate. Of course the ideal balance is a credit card that offers a great near term rate followed by an attractive, competitively priced low interest rate for the long term.

The interest rate charged on your credit card is widely regarded as the single most important component of your card. That’s because it determines the major cost for you to borrow or roll over balances and pay them off over time instead of all at once or within the same month that you make purchases. That’s why getting a zero percent or low interest credit card can be huge financial boon, no matter what your credit card usage patterns or money management strategies may be.

Looking to transfer your balance? Transfer your high interest debt to Citi Simplicity® Card - No Late Fees Ever with 0% for 21 months on Balance Transfers. Plus, you will get generous intro APR 0% for 12 months on Purchases.
