FAQs
Nope! Browsing or comparing offers won't affect your score. Using a pre-qualification tool usually triggers a soft credit pull, which doesn't affect credit. Your score may change though once you apply for a card, since that's considered a hard pull. To explore options without impacting your score, try our Credit Card Comparison Tool.
Most rewards cards are aimed at folks with good to excellent credit — generally 670+. Some issuers may approve applicants in the mid-600s, but the most competitive welcome offers, APRs, and perks usually go to applicants with scores at or above 700. If you're still building credit, there are cards that can help you grow your score responsibly.
First, choose a goal — earning cash back, funding travel, building credit, etc. Then turn your attention to APR, annual fees, intro offers, ongoing rewards, and approval odds. If a card offers rewards, make sure it lines up with your biggest spending categories and then check total cost of the card (fees + interest) versus value (rewards + benefits). Try using side-by-side comparisons to make things easier.
Approval is possible, even with poor credit (usually <580). You'll probably have better approval odds with a secured card (requires a refundable deposit) or subprime unsecured cards that may carry higher APRs and higher fees. Over time, you can help to build your credit by using your card responsibly. Just be sure to make your payments on time and aim to use no more than 30% of your card's limit.
Secured cards require a refundable deposit that typically sets your spending limit. These are usually easier to qualify for and can be a great way to help build credit. Unsecured cards don't require a deposit, and your credit score plays a big role in your approval. Over time, some secured cards can graduate to unsecured after a positive payment history or meeting issuer requirements.
Comparison tools can save time and reduce risk by showing multiple offers side-by-side, including APR, fees, perks, and estimated approval odds. This can help you find a card that meets your need faster and avoid unnecessary hard credit pulls. We made it easy to filter by goals (cash back, travel, balance transfer) so you can find your best match.
