Expert Reviews

From the CompareCards.com Editorial Team

The Blue Cash Preferred Card is an excellent cash back credit card with on of the best rewards rates on the market. Cardholders will earn 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, 3% back at U.S. gas stations & department stores, and an unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases. The 6% back is limited to the first $6,000 of supermarket spending each year, but you'll still earn 1% cash back if you happen to hit that cap.

By contrast, most rewards cards will either put a cap on how much cash back you can earn or they offer a lower percentage of rewards – or both. Since supermarket items and gasoline are two of the biggest expenses for most households, this card makes it easier to save considerable amounts of money. Cardholders can also earn $150 back in the form of a statement credit after spending $1,000 with the card in the first 3 months! As another intro bonus you can earn 5% cash back on eligible travel purchases in the first 6 months, up to $200.

There is an annual fee of $95, but with the generous rewards program you can easily make cost of the annual fee. Finally, there is a generous 0% intro APR for 12 months on purchases and balance transfers. After the intro period, your ongoing APR will be 13.24%-23.24% Variable based on your creditworthiness.

The Bottom Line

The American Express Blue Cash Preferred is the ultimate cash back rewards card for consumers who spent a lot of money on groceries and gas. This card not only comes with some of the most generous rewards, but there is a nice intro APR as well.

The Good

The 6% cash back on supermarkets is the highest cash back rate we've found on any credit card! When you add the 3% back on gas, and 1% on all other purchases, this card is a no-brainer for many consumers.

The Not so Good

You must have excellent credit to qualify and the annual fee is not waived the first year.

Have had this card a couple months and absolutely love it and the cashback is unbeatable. So glad I got approved with a very generous credit line. Thank you Amex!

Overall this has been a great card. I've had it for about two years and use it for about $2,000 in purchases a month. The rate is relatively low but I love the cash back I get every month for it. Use it mostly for Costco purchases but Costco is moving away from AMEX so I may be looking to get another card soon which is the reason this received a 4 instead of 5 star rating!

Play it right and earn $360 per year minus the $75 annual fee by charging groceries to the card and maxing out at $6000 for the year. 3% on gasoline is also hard to beat. This is the most generous rewards program available.

Just opened credit card less than a month ago. Applied online, it was stated that the membership fee will be waived for the first year. Got charged $ 75.00 on the first statement . Contacted customer service representative, Perry, who promised me to open inquiry and resolved the matter. It turns out that I was lied to and inquiry was not opened. I have a full transcript of online chat and nothing that was promised, has been done. Very disappointing

Who wants a card with rotten customer service? I am extremely tired of calling customer service numbers and getting remarks or answers that are totally useless.

As a college student, I've worked hard to earn an impeccable credit score of 840, and despite my short credit history, I found I qualified for this card. Being my second credit card after a VISA that I obtained through my bank, this AMEX blew everything out of the water. I was at first a little uncomfortable with the annual fee, but in the first four months I've earned triple in rewards of the annual $75 fee. My line of credit doubled from my VISA, which my bank refused to increase. The APR is a little high, but I so far have managed to pay the complete balance on time and I haven't paid a dime of interest. The rewards are great, and there are other protections, including travel insurance on renter's cars and accidental death and dismemberment. They also offer refunds on purchases when retailers refuse item returns. But most of all, the 6%/3%/1% cash back program kicks butt.

Just curious, how do you manage to get 840 when you just have one credit card and being a student?

Different scoring model is possibly why the score is so high...

This is the best card as long as you pay the balance every month. The rewards are extreme!
