Expert Reviews

From the Editorial Team

With this card you get the privilege of being an American Express cardmember and it will reward you with plenty of Starpoints. New cardholders can earn 2 free nights at participating SPG® Category 1-5 hotels & resorts worldwide after making $5,000 in purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.

For additional point accrual, cardmembers can earn up to 5 Starpoints for each eligible purchase charged directly with hotels and resorts participating in the SPG program; that’s 2 Starpoints per dollar spent on the card in addition to the points you get as an SPG member. One Starpoint is earned for each dollar spent on all other eligible purchases. Starpoints can be redeemed at more than 1,300 hotels in nearly 100 countries, or for air travel on more than 150 airlines with SPG Flights. Members also get to make reservations without annoying and restrictive blackout dates.

The current APR for purchases is 15.49% - 19.49% variable, depending on your creditworthiness. There is also a $95 annual fee, but the fee is waived for new cardholders in the first year.

The Bottom Line

This can be a very rewarding credit card for those who like to stay at Starwood hotels or use points to travel.

The Good

Your annual fee is waived the first year and you have a chance to earn a robust sign-on bonus. There are no blackout dates when you redeem points for hotel or airline reservations.

The Not so Good

There is a $95 annual fee that kicks in after the first year. Also, you'll need excellent credit to get approved.

I'm in sales and I stay in a Hotel at least 90 days out of the year. For my travels, the SPG brand has better member perks like the 4 PM late check out. Also, the SPG point system is a much better value than Hilton's system. The Good: With SPG's low points for stays and my SPG Amex card I always stay for free when I need to. I have not personally paid for a hotel room in over 2 years (if a SPG property was available). Unlike the other review, they actually raised my credit limit automatically. Those types of credit changes is something Amex typically does. If you're at least gold level in SPG and you have this Amex you get 5 points per dollar. So for a $200 average per night hotel stay for 5 nights you get 3000 points which is enough for a free night at a lot of properties. This card's customer service was always great when I needed them. The Bad: SPG properties are not everywhere like Hilton. A lot of small towns I travel to won't have them. The $65 fee is a bit high. Summary: If you are a frequent traveler and you go mostly to major cities (even around the world) I would recommend the SPG brand and this Amex card. If you don't travel a lot go for a cash back card.

When I first opened this account the benefits were nice. Spend, earn miles etc. However, after 5 years of loyalty, on time payments of way above the minimum payment due (practically paying the card off each time) American Express Starwood lowered my credit limit down to the balance due. I thought hmmm times are strange now with the economy etc. but I have great credit so I just brushed it off since I pay my limits off quickly. I was wrong. I once again sent in a large payment bringing my balance down to only a couple thousand, then the annual card fee was charged to my account followed by yet again another limit cut, reducing the amount to what I just had payed off. Nice hugh? I think this was extremely cut throat, unprofessional of American Express to have waited until they charged me the annual fee, then stalk my payments for them to slash my card limit twice in a year. I have good credit, never late with payment with all of my creditors. SOOOOO DISAPPOINTED!!!! Just because you have good credit and good payment history does not mean they won't do the same to you. BEWARE!

getting the card also gets you upgraded to gold status after spending a determined amount. This status gives you upgraded rooms and amenities. I save thousands of dollars a year on upgraded rooms - as platinum member, i just got upgraded to a $1500/night suite in Vieques. I paid $250.
