Expert Reviews

From the CompareCards.com Editorial Team

You only need average credit to qualify for the Barclaycard Rewards MasterCard, although it still has a great rewards rate including no annual fee. Cardmembers will earn one point per dollar on all purchases, plus double points (two per dollar) on items you already buy; gas, groceries, and utility purchases.

Reward points can easily be redeemed for credit to pay for anything you want, including retail shopping, restaurant dining, and travel on virtually any airline. Better yet, there are no redemption charges, there is no limit on how many points you can earn, and there are no blackout dates to limit your travel reservations.

The APR for cash advances is 24.99%* variable and the fee for foreign transactions is 3%, but that's no more than what most card companies charge these days. Take notice though, this card is not for those who are not on-time with their payments every month; the penalty APR is 27.24%.

    Overall Rating

The Bottom Line

This card requires only average credit -not excellent- but it also gives cardholders easy ways to earn rewards points and redeem them without annoying limitations and restrictions.

The Good

The rewards rate is really great, especially for someone with average credit. Cardmembers earn 2 points for purchases you already make, there's no annual fee and you earn 2,500 bonus points just for initially using the card.

The Not so Good

This card has a cash advance surcharge is higher than it is with most cards and there's also a 3% foreign transaction fee. That’s not unusual, but it could impact consumers planning to do lots of overseas spending.

I have 3 credit cards and this one is the worst one. The reason I chose this one was for the promotional deal. After getting the card and using it they started to charge me interest. The deal was no interest for 6 months and I would receive 100 dollars if I spent the 500 or more in the first three months. Well I spent the 500 dollars never received the 100 dollars and was charged interest. So I call to see what was going on and they claim that I never put the promotion code. If you want a good credit card that helps your credit and gives you the promotions that they offer go to the capital one quick silver card. I haven't had any problems with my capital one card and I have had it for over a year. The barclaycard is in my closet and is soon going to be deactivated. Nothing bothers me more than being scammed. Now if some of you out there have had good turn outs with this card I am happy for you but I have not. I have had many credit cards in my life and this one is the worst. Also I should have been charge interest in the first bill cycle and the interest didn't start until the third, since I was never signed up for the promotional deal like they claim.

You're right about the capital one quick silver card. it's great!!! I applied for this Barclaycard around the same time and was turned down even though I had a good enough credit score. I'm glad they did after reading your post!!!

This card does approve an average score but do not approve you if you have any past due old negatives. I was denied for a 6 yr old collection. Told me not to apply until I paid it off. They fall off after 7 yrs.

Jene, If you have collections it's normal to get denied for more credit card, my advice to you is to continuing paying all your bills on time and apply again.

Hey Jene I had the same thing happen and Capital One gave me 2 cards and they are awesome, Barclaycard can keep there cards!

Anybody that is trying to raise their credit score should check into this card. It does have an extremely high interest rate, but when you have average credit you have to expect that. After awhile if you make your payments on time I'm sure they will consider raising your credit limit, lowering your interest rate, or maybe even both. If they refuse to help you out if you have been good about paying on time and not going over your limit I would look into a different card. I love that they give you your FICO Credit Score for free! Finding a good credit card when you don't have perfect credit can be very difficult. This one even gives you rewards while helping you rebuild your credit!

I have used quite a few credit cards in my time, so When I wanted to get a new macbook, I decided to finance through Apple's credit plan. I was presented with this card as this is the bank Apple is working with. All in all, this is the most average and mundane card I have ever owned, and I have had student credit cards in the past. It is bare bones, with a criminal APR. Luckily by financing through apple, I had 0% APR for the first nine months and paid off quickly. I can only imagine how bad monthly fees could be with 24.99 APR. Perhaps Barclays has better cards for customers, and I hope they do. This card does not make a customer feel special and really, it offers no prestigious rewards for holding it. I have not experienced many of Barclay's products, but I can only imagine that they have better offerings than this card.

I have the US Air rewards card issued by Barclay's. Did balance transfers and they increased my limit $4,000 to do it. Very happy with the card. And you get 2 companion passes for $99 each once a year.

This is an awesome credit card! Great for someone (like me) trying to build credit and their credit score. Higher interest and lower limites, but they take more risk than other card companies.

Why would someone need to have ten credit cards? I've noticed you've commented on over 12 of these.

I apply to this card about 2 months ago and was denied. Since then I clean some discrepancies that I had on my credit. I saw a big increase to my score and kept seeing barclaycard as recommended with good chance of getting approved. My score is correctly TU 655 and I decided to call instead of applying online. I have a repo and a cap one card charge off. I was very polite and explain my goals. He was very friendly and he ask me some questions to verify my income. After that he approved me for a CL of $500.00. I am so happy that finally I have a decent card. So if you have some negative marks still you can get approved. Just call and explain your goals and why, it will be totally worth it.

This card is very reasonable. The application was easy and fast. I had 0 present interest rate for one year and have had no problems with it. The bill is sent by mail and also can get it online. Easy to check your balance. When my first year is up with them I will glad stay on.
