Rewards credit cards often come with a host of perks and benefits that the cardholders don’t even know exist. However, these perks can potentially offer a great value when you put them to use on things you were already going to spend your money on.
As the weather begins to cool off over the next few months, many Americans will br feeling the itch to get out on the golf course. If you’re an avid golfer, these three credit card come with rewards and perks that you will love.
This credit card is modeled after the popular BankAmericard Cash Rewards Credit Card, but comes with some fantastic perks for PGA fans through its TPC Rewards Program. The list of golf perks with this credit card is seemingly endless, but a few of the highlights include 20% off merchandise at TPC shops, discounted green fees, exclusive access to private clubs, and perhaps the best benefit of all, you’ll earn two tickets to the PGA TOUR event of your choice after you spend $75 on your card in the first 90 days.
Overall, this credit card is loaded with perks that golf lovers will drool over, and it also comes with one the best cash back programs on the market. Cardholders will earn 3% cash back on gas, 2% back on groceries, and 1% on all other purchases, but the grocery and gas bonus rewards are limited to the first $1,500 in combined purchases each quarter. To top it off, there is no annual fee, and cardholders can earn a $100 cash back bonus by spending $500 in the first 90 days.
The only thing better than a day on the golf course is a FREE day on the golf course! Citi Prestige cardholders will get just that. This premier travel rewards card offers three free rounds of golf each calendar year through a company called Golf Switch which operates on online reservation service for over 2,400 public and private golf courses worldwide. In addition to this generous perk, the Citi Prestige card currently offers a sign up bonus of 40,000 points when you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months. For ongoing rewards, cardholders will earn 3 points per dollar spent on flights and hotels, 2 points per dollar spent on dining and entertainment, and 1 point on all other purchases. Thanks to Chase’s partnership with the PGA, cardholders can purchase tickets to the PGA Championship before they become available to the general public. Bad Deals for Golf Lovers: Don’t be Fooled by These Cards
GoPlayGolf Visa Platinum Card: This card has a golf ball on the face and claims that cardholders can receive free golf through their rewards program. While this is technically true, the rewards rate is pretty miserable when you look into the fine print. Cardholders earn 1 point on every dollar spent, and you can redeem 5,000 points for a $50 GoPlayGolf gift card, which can be used for free golf at one of over 6,000 courses nationwide.
While this certainly does sounds appealing for an avid golfer, it basically boils down to the equivalent of a 1% cash back that can only be redeemed for golf. Cards like the Citi Double Cash, Chase Freedom, or Discover it all offer much more than 1% cash back and since you receive your rewards as a statement credit towards your account, you can redeem for anything you want, not just golf.
Golfsmith Credit Card: Although this credit card has a “Golf” in the name, it offers no real golf perks. This credit card basically just serves as a financing option for purchases made through Golfsmith.com. The purchase APR sits at an outrageously high 29.99% and the intro APR of 0% only lasts for 6 months on purchases over $299, and 12 months on purchases over $499. If you need to use a credit card to finance a big purchase, like a new set of golf clubs, you’ll be much better off with a low interest credit card like the Citi Simplicity which currently offers 0% APR for 21 months and an ongoing APR between 13.24% - 23.24%* (variable).
