Whether you’re a millennial, foodie, frequent traveler or Netflix junkie, the Uber Visa Card has a feature for your benefit. This rewards card has a $0 annual fee and a robust rewards program that rivals some of the best dining and travel cards.
Note: If you’re looking for the Uber Fuel Card which offered 1.5% off gas, it’s no longer available and April 24, 2018 was the last day cardholders could use the card.
We’ll review the various benefits and potential setbacks of the Uber Visa Card and compare it with alternative dining, travel and cashback cards.
What we like about the Uber Visa Card
4% back on dining purchases. The Uber Visa Card offers a fantastic 4% back on dining purchases which includes restaurants, Uber Eats, fast food, and bars. This is the highest rewards rate on dining purchases for a $0 annual fee card, earning you more rewards than other dining cards.
$0 annual fee. It’s hard to find a well-rounded travel and dining card that doesn’t charge an annual fee, setting the Uber Visa Card apart from competitors.
Annual subscription credit. You can receive up to a $50 credit for online subscription services after you spend $5,000 or more on your card per year. So, this can help cover some of the fees for streaming your favorite music, television shows and more. Eligible digital music, video and shopping subscription services include: Apple Music, Pandora, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Music, Audible, Sirius XM, Netflix, Hulu, HBO NOW, DirecTV NOW, the membership fee for Amazon Prime, and Shoprunner.
Cellphone protection. When you pay your cellphone bill with your card, you can receive up to $600 per claim for mobile phone damage or theft (up to $1,200 per 12-month period). Just know, this protection is secondary to any other insurance you have.
No foreign transaction fee. This card doesn’t charge a fee for purchases made outside the U.S. This is a key feature frequent travelers should look for since foreign transaction fees typically tack on 3% per transaction made abroad.
Exclusive access. Occasionally, cardholders may receive exclusive access to events and special offers in select U.S. cities; primarily New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and D.C.
What we don’t like about the Uber Visa Card
Redemption minimums. Before you can redeem rewards, you have to reach a minimum amount. Redemptions for Uber Cash start at 500 points for $5 and all other redemptions start at 2,500 points for $25. However, this isn’t a major setback since many cards set minimum reward redemption amounts of $25.
Daily redemption limit. You can’t redeem an unlimited amount of rewards in a single day — there is a $500 daily limit for redemptions for Uber credits and cash back via bank deposit. But, odds are you won’t be redeeming $500 worth of rewards in a day.
No intro 0% periods. This card doesn’t offer any introductory interest-free periods for new purchases or balance transfers. If you’re looking to finance new purchases, there are plenty of other cards offering no interest on purchases and balance transfers for up to 21 months.
Low 1% on everyday purchases. While the rewards program is great overall (4% back on dining, 3% back on hotel and airfare, 2% back for online purchases, and 1% on everything else) purchases outside the bonus categories earn a subpar 1%. You could earn more with a flat-rate card that offers 2% cash back on all purchases.
Rewards: Earn 4% back on dining, 3% back on hotel and airfare, 2% back for online purchases, and 1% on everything else. This rewards program is geared toward foodies and frequent travelers that want to maximize rewards in these categories.
New cardmember offer: Earn $100 after spending $500 on purchases in the first 90 days from account opening.
How to redeem: Rewards can conveniently be redeemed for Uber credits, cash back and gift cards online or via the app. One point is worth $0.01, so 5,000 points are worth $50 in Uber credits, cash back, or gift cards.
