Whether you’re a foodie, a frequent traveler or you simply use Uber regularly, the Uber Visa Card should be on your radar. The cashback rewards card has a $0 annual fee and a robust rewards program that rivals some of the best dining and travel cards.

The Uber Visa Card offers 5% back in Uber Cash on Uber rides, Uber Eats, and JUMP, 3% in Uber Cash on restaurants, bars, hotels, and airfare, and 1% back in Uber Cash on all other purchases.

Rewards, which are earned in the form of Uber Cash, can be redeemed for Uber rides, orders with Uber Eats and rides using JUMP bikes and scooters. Uber Cash is worth 1 cent when redeemed for products and services in the Uber app.

In this review, we’ll break down the pros and cons of the Uber Visa Card, and show how it compares to the Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card.

In this post:

Where the Uber Visa Card stands out

Rewards rate. The Uber Visa Card offers an extremely high rewards rate on Uber, Uber Eats and JUMP purchases. Cardholders earn 5% back in Uber Cash on Uber rides, Uber Eats, and JUMP, 3% in Uber Cash on restaurants, bars, hotels, and airfare, and 1% back in Uber Cash on all other purchases.

Sign-up bonus. Earn $100 in Uber Cash after spending $500 on purchases in the first 90 days from account opening.

Although there are cash back cards available with larger sign-up bonuses, they typically require a higher spend threshold to earn the bonus. For example, with the Bank of America® Cash Rewards credit card, cardholders earn a $200 online cash rewards bonus after you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening.

By contrast, you only have to spend an average of $167 per month on the card for three months to earn the Uber card’s bonus.

Annual fee. The Uber Visa Card comes with a $0 annual fee.

Cell phone protection. When you pay your cell phone bill with your card, you can receive up to $600 per eligible claim for mobile phone damage or theft (up to $1,200 per 12-month period). Just know, however, that this protection is secondary to any other insurance you have.

Additional benefits:

  • Foreign transaction fees: None
  • Free online access to your FICO® Score

Where the Uber Visa Card falls short

Limited redemption options. Cash back rewards cards often allow cardholders to redeem cash back for statement credits, charitable donations, gift cards, merchandise and more. However, with the Uber Visa Card, you can only redeem Uber Cash for Uber rides, orders with Uber Eats and rides using JUMP bikes and scooters.

No intro APRs. The Uber Visa Card doesn’t offer any introductory interest-free periods for new purchases or balance transfers — so if you’re looking to finance new purchases over time or transfer a card balance, this isn’t the card for you.

Compare it to the Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card offers a slightly higher rewards rate on dining, entertainment and grocery store purchases than the Uber Visa Card

Cardholders earn 4% Cash Back on dining; 4% Cash Back on entertainment; 2% Cash Back at grocery stores; 1% Cash Back on all other purchases. Plus, earn 8% cash back on tickets at Vivid Seats through Jan 2022. Additionally, earn 4% cash back on select streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu and Disney+, through Sept. 30, 2020.

See how the cards compare side by side in the table below.

Unlike the Uber Visa Card, the Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card lets you redeem your rewards in a variety of ways, including statement credits, checks, gift cards or purchases. The card also offers a larger sign-up bonus; however, the spend threshold required to earn the bonus is significantly higher as well.

Keep in mind, though, that the Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card comes with an annual fee of $0 intro for first year; $95 after that.

Bottom line

The Uber Visa Card is a great choice if you want to earn a generous amount of cash back on Uber rides, orders with Uber Eats, JUMP and travel purchases — all while paying a $0 annual fee.

But if you want to earn a higher rewards rate on dining, entertainment and grocery store purchases, and more opportunities for reward redemption, you’ll be better off with the Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card. However, you will be responsible for paying an annual fee of $0 intro for first year; $95 after that.
