If you frequently purchase groceries, cleaning supplies, toiletries and other household items in bulk from one of the nearly 600 Sam’s Club locations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, you may want to take a look at the Sam's Club Mastercard.

The card offers a generous cashback rewards rate, which can be used to help offset your monthly Sam’s Club charges. Cardholders earn 5% cash back on gas (on the first $6,000 per year, then 1%), 3% back on dining and travel, 1% back on other purchases. Additionally, you can  $55 statement credit when you open a new account and make $55 in sam’s club purchase within 30 days

We break down the pros and cons of the Sam's Club Mastercard, and show how it compares to the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card.

Sam's Club Mastercard pros

Rewards rate. Cardholders earn 5% cash back on gas (on the first $6,000 per year, then 1%), 3% back on dining and travel, 1% back on other purchases.

If you max out the $6,000 spending limit on gas each year, you can earn $300 cash back on those purchases. Note, the gas category includes eligible fuel purchases at Sam’s Club and Walmart fuel stations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, as well as gas stations located in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Purchases made at fuel stations that are located at or a part of warehouse clubs (other than Sam’s Club or Walmart fuel centers) and certain supercenters and supermarkets are not eligible to earn the higher cashback rate.

Sign-up bonus. Although the Sam's Club Mastercard offers a modest sign-up bonus compared to many other cash back credit cards listed on our site, the spend threshold required to earn the bonus is very low. Cardholders $55 statement credit when you open a new account and make $55 in sam’s club purchase within 30 days

Annual fee. The Sam's Club Mastercard comes with a $0 annual fee; however, you are required to purchase a Sam’s Club membership, which runs $45 for Select Club and $100 for Select Plus annually.

That said, the card’s sign-up bonus can cover the Select Club membership fee for the first year of card membership.

Additional Sam's Club Mastercard benefits:

  • Access to up to $100 in cash at any Sam’s Club or Walmart register
  • Acceptance at Sam’s Club and Walmart locations throughout the U.S.
  • The Sam's Club Mastercard can also serve as your Sam’s Club membership card

Sam's Club Mastercard cons

Restrictive redemption options. Typically, cashback credit cards allow cardholders to redeem rewards as statement credits, checks or cash. However, with the Sam's Club Mastercard, your cashback rewards will automatically be loaded to your Sam’s Club membership and can only be used at Sam’s Club locations or SamsClub.com.

Additionally, cash back is only issued once a year in February of the following year in which you earned the rewards.

Cap on cashback rewards. You can only earn the higher cashback rate on the first $6,000 in gas purchases each year, then 1% after. Also, the total amount of cash back you can earn in a calendar year is capped at $5,000.

Compare it with the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card
