If you’re a Midwestern supermarket chain Meijer customer and regularly purchase gas, food, clothing and other household items from one of its 240 supercenters, it may be worthwhile to consider a Meijer credit card, like the Meijer Mastercard®.

Issued by Citi, an advertising partner of CompareCards, the Meijer Mastercard® offers discounts at Meijer gas stations, as well as rewards when you make $750 in purchases anywhere that Mastercard is accepted.

We break down the pros and cons of the Meijer Mastercard®, and show how it compares to the Walmart Rewards Card.

Meijer Mastercard® pros

Introductory offer. Receive $10 off first purchase when approved with your Meijer Mastercard® in the first 30 days of account opening.

Rewards and discounts. Get a . Note that the $750 spend can be made anywhere that accepts Mastercard.

Annual fee: The Meijer Mastercard® comes with a $0 annual fee.

Additional Meijer Mastercard® benefits:

  • Access to exclusive savings events
  • Online account management
  • Paperless billing
  • Personalized alerts and notifications

Meijer Mastercard® cons

Limited redemption options. Rewards can only be used to purchase qualifying items at Meijer.  Additionally, rewards expire 60 days after issuance if issued as a paper certificate and 45 days after issuance if digitally issued.

Limited store locations. Meijer only has store locations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Wisconsin.

High APR. If you don’t pay your card balance in full each month, you will be charged a high interest rate of APR.

Compare it to the Walmart Rewards Card

If you like the convenience of shopping at a supercenter, but don’t shop or live near a Meijer store, a Walmart store card, like the Walmart Rewards Card, may be a better option. As the largest brick and mortar retailer in the world, Walmart has approximately 11,500 stores in 27 countries, compared to Meijer’s 240 locations in only six U.S. states.

The Walmart Rewards Card comes with a $0 annual fee and offers cash back on Walmart purchases. Plus, cardholders earn an introductory bonus of 5% back for the first 12 months when you use your card with Walmart Pay for in-store purchases, upon approval.

Both cards offer $0 annual fees and similar purchase APRs. But unlike the Meijer Mastercard® — which can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted — the Walmart Rewards Card can only be used at Walmart stores, Walmart.com and Walmart fuel stations (including Murphy gas stations).

However, if you spend a significant amount at Walmart supercenters each month, you stand to earn much more cash back with the Walmart Rewards Card’s introductory bonus. For example, if you make $1,000 in purchases each month using Walmart Pay, you can earn $600 cash back at the end of the first year.

By contrast, if you spend $1,000 a month on groceries and other items with the Meijer Mastercard®, you’ll only earn $160 in rewards at the end of the year, though if you use the card to fill up your gas tank often, the savings could be more substantial.

Which card is best for you?

Ultimately, the right card for you depends on which store you spend the most each month. If you spend a large amount on gas, groceries, toiletries and other household items at Meijer, the Meijer Mastercard® may be the best option. But if you prefer shopping at Walmart, the Walmart Rewards Card would be the better choice.

Or, if you want to earn rewards everywhere you shop, you may want to consider a card that offers a flat cashback rate on every purchase, such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited®.
