Rewards or cashback cards that allow you to choose bonus categories seem to be trending, and are tailored to your changing spending needs. Most credit cards predetermine the spending categories for which you’ll earn the highest rewards rates — but not the Huntington Voice Credit Card®.
This card provides a list of categories, and you can choose one every quarter to earn 3 points per dollar spent (up to $2,000 in spending a quarter in the category, then 1 point per dollar spent). This allows cardholders the flexibility to tailor their spending in the category of their choice and make adjustments as needed each quarter.
During the application process, you have the option to opt into the rewards program or, instead, choose a 2% lower interest rate. The regular purchase APR is , but if you choose the lower rate option, your APR is 12.24% to 26.24% variable. If you carry a balance month-to-month, the lower APR range can provide more benefit than rewards.
We’ll review where the Huntington Voice Credit Card® stands out and falls short, and how it compares to another flexible quarterly rewards card, the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card.
What we like about the Huntington Voice Credit Card®
$0 annual fee. You won’t be charged an annual fee to use this card, which is common among cards with bonus categories.
Flexible rewards. Every quarter, you have the ability to select a new bonus category from a list of 10 options to earn 3 points per dollar spent. This is especially helpful for cardholders who don’t have preset spending habits and want some control over the category they earn high rewards in.
Option to receive a lower interest rate. This card provides applicants a unique choice — earn rewards or receive a 2% lower interest rate. If your cash flow varies and you may carry a balance month-to-month, it can be a good idea to choose the lower interest rate option. This will reduce any interest charges you may incur from to 12.24% to 26.24% variable.
Balance transfer offer. The Huntington Voice Credit Card® offers a After, APR. This provides a year for you to pay off any transferred balances without incurring interest charges. While this isn’t the longest intro 0% APR period, it can still help you make a dent in your debt.
What we don’t like about the Huntington Voice Credit Card®
No special financing for new purchases. This card doesn’t offer an intro 0% APR period for new purchases, so if you carry a balance month-to-month, you’ll incur interest charges. As a result, make sure to pay off your balance in full every month to avoid interest.
Quarterly limit on the higher rewards rate. The amount of points you can earn at the 3X rate is limited to $2,000 in spending each quarter, or 6,000 points (equal to $60). Once you reach the quarterly maximum, you’ll earn 1 point per dollar spent. This is a common restriction of quarterly rewards cards and can limit the amount of rewards you earn at the bonus rewards rate.
Low everyday rewards rate. Purchases outside the bonus category only earn a subpar 1 point per dollar spent. You can benefit more from a flat-rate cashback or rewards card that can earn up to 2.5% per dollar spent on all purchases.
Cardholders earn You can select your 3X category once within the first 30 days from account opening, then again before the start of each quarter for the next quarter.
