Rewards or cashback cards that allow you to choose bonus categories seem to be trending, and are tailored to your changing spending needs. Most credit cards predetermine the spending categories for which you’ll earn the highest rewards rates — but not the Huntington Voice Credit Card®.
This card provides a list of categories, and you can choose one every quarter to earn 3 points per dollar spent (up to $2,000 in spending a quarter in the category, then 1 point per dollar spent). This allows cardholders the flexibility to tailor their spending in the category of their choice and make adjustments as needed each quarter.
During the application process, you have the option to opt into the rewards program or, instead, choose a 2% lower interest rate. The regular purchase APR is 14.24% - 28.24% Variable, but if you choose the lower rate option, your APR is 12.24% to 26.24% variable. If you carry a balance month-to-month, the lower APR range can provide more benefit than rewards.
We’ll review where the Huntington Voice Credit Card® stands out and falls short, and how it compares to another flexible quarterly rewards card, the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card.
What we like about the Huntington Voice Credit Card®
$0 annual fee. You won’t be charged an annual fee to use this card, which is common among cards with bonus categories.
Flexible rewards. Every quarter, you have the ability to select a new bonus category from a list of 10 options to earn 3 points per dollar spent. This is especially helpful for cardholders who don’t have preset spending habits and want some control over the category they earn high rewards in.
Option to receive a lower interest rate. This card provides applicants a unique choice — earn rewards or receive a 2% lower interest rate. If your cash flow varies and you may carry a balance month-to-month, it can be a good idea to choose the lower interest rate option. This will reduce any interest charges you may incur from 14.24% - 28.24% Variable to 12.24% to 26.24% variable.
Balance transfer offer. The Huntington Voice Credit Card® offers a 0.00% Introductory APR for the first 12 billing cycles following account opening on any balance transfer made within the first 90 days following account opening. After, 14.24% - 28.24% Variable APR. This provides a year for you to pay off any transferred balances without incurring interest charges. While this isn’t the longest intro 0% APR period, it can still help you make a dent in your debt.
What we don’t like about the Huntington Voice Credit Card®
No special financing for new purchases. This card doesn’t offer an intro 0% APR period for new purchases, so if you carry a balance month-to-month, you’ll incur interest charges. As a result, make sure to pay off your balance in full every month to avoid interest.
Quarterly limit on the higher rewards rate. The amount of points you can earn at the 3X rate is limited to $2,000 in spending each quarter, or 6,000 points (equal to $60). Once you reach the quarterly maximum, you’ll earn 1 point per dollar spent. This is a common restriction of quarterly rewards cards and can limit the amount of rewards you earn at the bonus rewards rate.
Low everyday rewards rate. Purchases outside the bonus category only earn a subpar 1 point per dollar spent. You can benefit more from a flat-rate cashback or rewards card that can earn up to 2.5% per dollar spent on all purchases.
Cardholders earn 3X points in one of 10 categories (up to $2,000 per quarter or 6,000 points), and all other purchases earn 1X points. You can select your 3X category once within the first 30 days from account opening, then again before the start of each quarter for the next quarter.
The 3X categories are preselected and include:
- Gas stations
- Travel and entertainment
- Discount and warehouse stores
- Grocery stores
- Utility and office supply stores
- Electronics, computer and camera stores
- Department, apparel and sporting goods stores
- Auto parts and service stores
- Home improvement stores
Every point is worth a penny and can be redeemed in several ways:
- Cash back
- Gift card
Compare it to the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card
If you want to earn a higher 5% rewards rate on purchases made in two categories of your choosing, the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card is a great option. Cardholders earn 5% cash back on your first $2,000 in combined eligible net purchases ($100 per quarter) on two categories you choose. That adds up to $400 cash back!
Choose from one of these three categories to earn 2% cash back: gas stations, restaurants, or grocery stores. Then, choose two of these categories to earn 5% cash back up to $2,000 in combined eligible net purchases each quarter ($100 per quarter):
- Home utilities
- Ground transportation
- Select clothing stores
- Cell phone providers
- Electronics stores
- Car rentals
- Gyms/fitness centers
- Fast food
- Sporting goods stores
- Department stores
- Furniture stores
- Movie theaters
Compared to the Huntington Voice Credit Card®, the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card provides a higher rewards rate (5% cash back versus 3X points) on bonus category purchases with the same $2,000 quarterly limit. There are also more bonus category choices, such as gyms/fitness centers and ground transportation.
The U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card also has a lower APR range of 15.74% - 25.24%* (Variable) versus the Huntington Voice Credit Card® with 14.24% - 28.24% Variable. Since both cards lack an intro 0% APR period for new purchases, it could be a good idea to choose the card with the lower APR range in case you carry a balance month-to-month.
Here’s a breakdown of the key features of both cards:
|Huntington Voice Credit Card®||U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card|
|Regular purchase APR||14.24% - 28.24% Variable||15.74% - 25.24%* (Variable)|
|Intro purchase APR||N/A||N/A|
|Intro balance transfer APR||0.00% Introductory APR for the first 12 billing cycles following account opening on any balance transfer made within the first 90 days following account opening.||0% for 12 billing cycles on Balance Transfers*|
|Balance transfer fee||The greater of $10.00 or 3% of the amount of each balance transfer.||3%|
|Rewards||3X points in one of 10 categories (up to $2,000 per quarter or 6,000 points), and all other purchases earn 1X points.||5% cash back on your first $2,000 in combined eligible net purchases ($100 per quarter) on two categories you choose. That adds up to $400 cash back!|
The Huntington Voice Credit Card® is a decent choice for people looking for a flexible rewards card. Each quarter, you can conveniently choose from one of 10 bonus categories to earn 3 points per dollar spent (up to $2,000 a quarter). Unlike other quarterly rewards cards that predetermine the bonus categories, this card provides the ability to adapt your rewards to changing spending habits. Plus, the quarterly cap is $500 higher than many competing cards, allowing you to benefit from more rewards at the 3X rate. However, if you want to maximize rewards and earn up to 5% cash back in two categories of your choosing, consider the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card.
