While some credit cards offer points or cash back on gas purchases, other cards, such as the ExxonMobil Smart Card, offer discounts on fuel purchases. The ExxonMobil Smart Card lets you save 6 cents per gallon on fuel purchases at Exxon and Mobil gas station locations throughout the U.S.

If you apply for the card by Dec. 31, 2019, you can enjoy even more savings on fuel purchases: Get 12 cents off every gallon of Synergy fuel for the first 2 months after account open date when you apply online or 50 cents off the first 2 months when you apply through the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ app (valid through 12/31/19). Discounts are earned in the form of statement credits.

According to AAA, the average national gas price is $2.65 per gallon as of Oct. 8, 2019. If you apply for the ExxonMobil Smart Card through the ExxonMobil Rewards+ app and take advantage of the card’s promotional sign-up bonus, that price per gallon will go down to $2.15.

For example, if you spend $160 per month on 60 gallons of gas, you’ll spend $129 (based on the average $2.65 price) — for a savings of $31. However, once the promotional period ends, the price difference isn’t nearly as substantial. With the 6 cents per gallon discount, you’ll end up spending $2.59 per gallon — bringing your monthly total to $155.40, less than a $5 difference using the 60-gallon example.

In this review, we’ll break down the pros and cons of the ExxonMobil Smart Card, as well as show how it compares to another credit card that offers gas rewards: the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi.

Where the ExxonMobil Smart Card stands out

Introductory bonus. Get 12 cents off every gallon of Synergy fuel for the first 2 months after account open date when you apply online or 50 cents off the first 2 months when you apply through the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ app (valid through 12/31/19).

Gas savings. After the introductory bonus expires, cardholders save 6 cents per gallon on fuel purchases at Exxon and Mobil gas station locations throughout the U.S.

Annual fee. The ExxonMobil Smart Card comes with a $0 annual fee.

Additional ExxonMobil Smart Card benefits

  • $0 fraud liability
  • Online account management
  • Citi identity theft solutions
  • ATM cash access
  • Monthly fuel cost tracking
  • Additional cards at no additional cost

Where the ExxonMobil Smart Card falls short

Restrictions on discounts. While you can use the ExxonMobil Smart Card to purchase snacks, beverages and other items inside of ExxonMobil convenience stores, you will only receive discounts on fuel purchases at Exxon and Mobil locations.

High APR. If you don’t pay your card balance in full each month, you will be charged a high APR of 28.24% variable.

More Info

If you’re not partial to Exxon Mobil gas stations and want to earn rewards on more than just gas purchases, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is a good alternative.

The card currently offers one of the highest cashback rates for gas purchases: Cardholders earn 4% cash back on eligible gas for the first $7,000 per year and then 1% thereafter, 3% on restaurants & travel, 2% at Costco & Costco.com, 1% on all other purchases.

See how the cards compare side by side in the table below.

ExxonMobil Smart Card vs. Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi

ExxonMobil Smart Card Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi
Annual fee $0 $0
Sign-up bonus Get 12 cents off every gallon of Synergy fuel for the first 2 months after account open date when you apply online or 50 cents off the first 2 months when you apply through the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ app (valid through 12/31/19) N/A

Regular APR for purchases 28.24% variable 16.74% (Variable)

Unlike the ExxonMobil Smart Card, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi lets you earn rewards on every purchase and can be used anywhere Visa is accepted. Additionally, you can earn cash back on eligible gas purchases worldwide, including at Costco gas stations. (Note, you cannot earn the bonus cashback rate for gas purchased at superstores, supermarkets, convenience stores or warehouse clubs other than Costco or for fuel used for non-automobile purposes.)

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi does come with a spending cap on the bonus rate for gas purchases, though. However, unless you spend around $583 per month on gas, you’re not likely to reach the $7,000 spend cap. That said, if you do hit the $7,000 spend cap, you’ll earn $280 cash back in a year.

But if you only spend $160 per month on gas (like the example above), you will earn around $77 cash back in one year.

While the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi comes with a $0 annual fee, you are required to have a Costco membership, which runs $60 for a Gold Star Membership and $120 for a Gold Star Executive membership.

The bottom line

Whether you have a long daily commute or are planning a road trip home for the holidays, the ExxonMobil Smart Card offers a great opportunity to save on your fuel purchases. But if you want more flexibility in where you earn gas rewards and want to earn cash back on every purchase, the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi is the better choice.
