As a business owner, American Airlines is full of possibilities as your carrier of choice thanks to a route network that covers nearly 350 destinations in more than 50 countries with 6,700 flights a day. And  after earning elite status in the airline’s AAdvantage® loyalty program, travelers can enjoy an array of  benefits designed to make travel easier.

If your business flies American often and is looking for an airline card to rack up free flights and perks, consider the CitiBusiness®/ AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®. The card comes with enough perks to make it worth consideration, plus it comes with handy business management tools.

We’ll look at what the card offers and why you may want to consider applying for it. And if you determine that you need more flexibility in earning and redeeming points, we’ll compare it with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card.

The card’s annual fee is $99, waived for first 12 months*. But once you’ve checked a bag on two round-trip domestic flights, at $30 each way, that yearly fee is covered. Since you can get that free checked bag for you and up to four other companions, the fee can be paid off even faster.

The sign-up bonus: Earn up to 60,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles: 50,000 AAdvantage® miles after making $3,000 in purchases in first 3 months and 10,000 after making a total of $10,000 in purchases in first 12 months of account opening*. Those miles could be redeemed for a round-trip flight between the U.S. and the Caribbean in business class.

New cardholders can earn 2 AAdvantage® miles per $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases* and for every $1 spent on purchases at telecommunications, car rental merchants and at gas stations*, 1 AAdvantage® mile per $1 spent on other purchases*. Businesses can rack up more miles for spending on both American Airlines-related travel and at vendors where companies spend the most money.

Employee cards are free, allowing a business to earn miles from those cards and set credit limits for each employee. A personal business assistant is available to help with travel, dining, shopping and entertainment, and you can keep track of monthly billing statements and account summaries online.

CitiBusiness®/ AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® perks include preferred boarding, a 25% in-flight discount on in-flight Wi-Fi, travel accident insurance, car rental insurance, travel and emergency assistance, purchase assurance and an extended warranty.

The card comes with an American Airlines domestic companion certificate every year you spend at least $30,000 on the card and renew your membership. And this card is great for travel abroad, as the foreign transaction fee is 0%.

Where the CitiBusiness®/ AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® falls short

While a sign-up bonus is nice, check the fine print on this card because you must hit two spending goals — within three and 12 months, respectively — to get it. Other travel-branded business credit cards on the market offer more points for spending on non-airline travel, dining and gas.

If you’re trying to achieve or maintain your AAdvantage® premium elite status, this card doesn’t come with a way to earn bonus AAdvantage® miles that help you do that. It also doesn’t come with access to the Admirals Club airport lounge.

When you use your annual companion certificate, it will cost you $99, plus between $21.60 and $43.20 in government taxes and fees. Forget about using it for a trip to Paris or Hawaii, because the certificate is only good for travel in the 48 contiguous U.S. states.

For an airline card targeting business travelers, it’s disappointing that the CitiBusiness®/ AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® doesn’t come with travel insurance covering baggage delays, lost luggage, trip interruption or trip cancellation. Also, there’s no mechanism to upload card spending onto popular accounting apps such as QuickBooks.

If your business is located in a city where American Airlines isn’t the dominant carrier or you just want more flexibility to redeem your points on other airlines, then the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card would be a better option. It targets businesses that want a nice sign-up bonus, higher points in top spending categories and the travel and protection perks valued by companies.

The card has a sign-up bonus that lets businesses Earn 80,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That adds up to $1,000 that can be redeemed for travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards® website.

Earn 3 points per $1 on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases on travel, shipping purchases, Internet, cable and phone services, advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines each account anniversary year. Earn 1 point per $1 on all other purchases—with no limit to the amount you can earn. These spending categories are attractive to businesses. Plus, the points earned on the card are worth 25% more when you redeem for travel at the Chase Ultimate Rewards website.

Unlike the CitiBusiness®/ AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®, the travel spending category is much broader with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, covering airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges, highways, parking lots and garages.

Points can be redeemed for vacation packages, cruises or flights on most major airlines with no restrictions or blackout dates at Chase Ultimate Rewards plus earn 25% more value for them. You can use points to buy gift cards, pay for part or all of your orders at Amazon.com or redeem points for cash back as a statement credit or direct deposit to most U.S. checking and savings accounts. Points can also be transferred 1:1 to nine airline or three hotel loyalty programs in 1,000-point increments.

Employee cards are free, allowing businesses to track employee spending and set spending limits. Other perks include cellphone protection, trip cancellation/trip interruption insurance, roadside dispatch, auto rental collision damage waiver, purchase protection and an extended warranty. And this card is perfect when traveling outside the U.S. since it has a $0 foreign transaction fee.

Alas, you can’t earn higher points per dollar spent on the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card for restaurants and gas, especially since these are two spending categories that can be important to some businesses. Once you hit the card’s $150,000 account anniversary cap for spending in the top points categories, all card charges drop to an unlimited 1 point per dollar spent.

If you decide to call the Chase Travel Center to do a 1:1 transfer to an airline or hotel loyalty program, it could cost you up to $20 per transaction, so stick to using the Chase Ultimate Rewards website to avoid this fee.

The bottom line

When it comes to business credit cards, you want one that gives you the most points or miles in the categories where your company spends the most. You want a card with a lower fee, but that also comes with perks that are attractive to road warriors.

The CitiBusiness®/ AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®, with its $99, waived for first 12 months* annual fee, comes with higher miles per dollar spent for American Airlines travel, along with telecommunications merchants, cable and satellite providers, car rental companies and gas stations.

The Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, with its $95 annual fee, allows you to earn higher points for a broader definition of travel, shipping purchases, Internet, cable and phone services, and on advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines. You also earn more value for your points when you redeem them at the Chase Ultimate Rewards website for travel.
