If you are a business owner who travels frequently, the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express should be on your radar. In addition to a variety of travel benefits, including baggage insurance and car rental insurance, the card offers rewards on every purchase.

Cardholders earn 2 points per dollar on eligible purchases at amextravel.com and 1 point per dollar on eligible purchases. Plus, earn 3X Membership Rewards® points on your combined eligible purchases, up to the first $50,000, at U.S. restaurants, on hotel stays booked directly with hotels, and on airfare purchased directly from airlines in first 3 months of Card Membership. Additionally, cardholders earn an ongoing rewards rate of 2 points per dollar on eligible purchases at amextravel.com and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

Where the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express stands out

Limited Time Offer. Earn 3X Membership Rewards® points on your combined eligible purchases, up to the first $50,000, at U.S. restaurants, on hotel stays booked directly with hotels, and on airfare purchased directly from airlines in first 3 months of Card Membership. Offer ends 11/6/2019.

If you max out the spending threshold of $50,000 on those purchases in the first three months, you’ll earn 150,000 bonus points.

Rewards rate. Earn 2 points per dollar on eligible purchases at amextravel.com and 1 point per dollar on eligible purchases. There is no limit on the amount of points you can earn, and points do not expire.

Free employee cards. With the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express, you will not be charged an additional fee for additional employee cards each year. Plus, you will earn Membership Rewards points for purchases made on employee cards.

Where the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express falls short

Annual fee. The Business Green Rewards Card from American Express comes with a $95 annual fee. But keep in mind that you won’t be charged an annual fee for additional employee cards.

Foreign transaction fee. If you travel abroad with this card, you will be charged 2.7% of each transaction after conversion to US dollars for purchases made with the card outside the U.S.

Cannot carry a balance. Because the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express is a charge card, it requires you to pay your balance in full each month. However, American Express does offer a Pay Over Time feature, which gives eligible cardholders the option to pay for certain purchases over time with interest. Note, enrollment is required, and you will accrue interest charges at an APR of 19.74% Variable on all eligible purchases if you choose to carry a balance.

Unlike the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express, the Capital One® Spark® Miles for Business does not require you to pay your balance in full each month. However, because the card does not offer an introductory APR on purchases, you will incur an APR of 18.74% (variable) if you have to carry a balance. Keep in mind, though, that the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express does offer the Pay Over Time feature for those who qualify.

Additionally, if you plan to travel outside of the U.S., you’ll be better off with the Capital One® Spark® Miles for Business, since it doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees. On the other hand, the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express charges 2.7% of each transaction after conversion to US dollars.

The bottom line

The Business Green Rewards Card from American Express is worth considering if your company spends a large amount on U.S. travel each year. Along with a solid rewards rate, the card comes with several perks, including car rental loss and damage insurance and free employee cards.

But if you want to earn travel rewards on business expenses without paying an annual fee the first year, the Capital One® Spark® Miles for Business is a good alternative. In addition to offering bonus rewards on every purchase, the card comes with an annual fee of $0 intro for first year; $95 after that.

Or, if you plan to finance a large business expense, you may be better off with a card that offers an introductory APR on purchases for an extended period of time, like the Discover it® Business Card.
