Those who love to travel and have certain Chase credit cards know a top benefit is redeeming points through the Chase Ultimate Rewards® website, considered one of the most generous and flexible rewards programs on the market.

Cards covered under the program are:

  • Chase Freedom®
  • Chase Freedom Unlimited®
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve®
  • Ink Business Cash℠ Credit Card
  • Ink Business Unlimited℠ Credit Card
  • Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card

We’ll see how to redeem points for travel via the Chase Ultimate Rewards website and highlight the rewards and perks of each Chase card that comes with Ultimate Rewards access. Finally, we’ll answer your questions about Chase Ultimate Rewards. Terms apply to Chase credit card offers. See chase.com for more information.

Using points

Chase gives cardholders three ways to use their points:

  1. Book via the Chase Ultimate Rewards website. Reserve and book flights and rooms on most airlines and hotels, along with car rentals. Your points work like cash to pay for some or all of the price. Those with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card can receive 25% more value for their points when they’re redeemed at Chase Ultimate Rewards. That value jumps to 50% if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card.
  2. Transfer points to travel partners. Move your points 1:1 to nine airline and four hotel loyalty programs. It’s a good way to get more value if you already have points or miles in specific loyalty programs.
  3. Redeem for a statement credit. Apply your rewards points toward your card balance or deposit it directly to most U.S. checking and savings accounts.

Booking travel

The easiest way to use your points for travel is to book via the Chase Ultimate Rewards website, by following these steps:

Log on to the Ultimate Rewards website.

If you have more than one Chase card, make sure you combine your points to get the maximum value for your travel bookings.

Hover your mouse over “Redeem for travel.”

If it’s a flight you’re after, enter your information and click “Search.” You can choose the number of passengers, class of service and whether or not you want to limit your search to nonstop flights. You can also opt to include a car rental, hotel or tourist activities.

In this case, we searched for a flight between New York-JFK and Los Angeles. The result here reflects the 50% bonus you receive for booking flights as a Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholder. While the cheapest flight costs $296.40, the reward would only cost you 19,760 points.

Note that if you don’t see the airline of your choice on the Chase Ultimate Rewards website, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t book through that airline. Some airlines not on the website, such as Southwest, Allegiant, Norwegian and Gol, can be booked by calling a Chase representative.

Remember to include more airports around your area to make sure you aren’t missing on other opportunities, such as searching for NYC-LAX, which covers all airports in the New York region, rather than JFK-LAX. In the example below, you’ll see the total number of points required to reserve the flight as well as the cost. You can choose to pay in $312 in cash or redeem 20,800 points for the flight at checkout.

Chase Ultimate Rewards FAQs

Does the Chase Ultimate Rewards website list the same airfare as airlines and other travel sites?

Not always. It’s always good to compare fares at other sources, like airline websites and online travel agents: Expedia, Google Flights, Kayak, Orbitz, Priceline and Travelocity, to name a few.

What airlines can I use for travel with points?
There are two ways to use your points for travel. One, you can book directly at Chase Ultimate Rewards, where there are no restrictions or rules on valid award travel — they’re good at almost every major airline. Second, you can transfer points to one of nine airline partners: Aer Lingus AerClub, British Airways Executive Club, Flying Blue Air France/KLM, Iberia Plus, JetBlue TrueBlue, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards®, United MileagePlus® and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.

Will I earn airline loyalty program miles for flights I book with points?
If you transfer your points to an airline loyalty program, you won’t. But if you buy a ticket through Chase Ultimate Rewards using points or cash, you can earn miles under that airline’s loyalty program.

How long does it take to transfer points into airline miles?
Chase does miles transfers instantly — but check with the airline to see how long it takes to access your miles once the transfer from Chase is completed.

Check out credit cards with airline mile transfer features.

How is travel defined by Chase Ultimate Rewards?

The travel category includes airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages.

The bottom line

The Chase Ultimate Rewards website is a powerful tool for cardmembers who want to get the most out of their points, especially if they have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card.

The site, powered by Expedia, allows cardmembers to search more than 250 airlines, 272,000 lodging options and dozens of car rental companies around the world. There’s also access to special discounts and seasonal offers.

The next time you’re ready to book a flight, a hotel room, a rental car or a cruise, consider doing it at the Chase Ultimate Rewards website so you get the biggest bang for your points buck.
