BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card pros

Rewards. Earn 3% cash back on most in-Club and BJs.com purchases and get 10¢ off per gallon at BJ’s Gas® every day. Cardholders also earn 2% cash back on dining out and on gas purchases outside of BJ’s and 1% cash back everywhere else Mastercard is accepted.

When you accumulate $20 cash back, your earnings are converted to “awards.” Awards can be used at the checkout at BJ’s or requested as a check by calling 800-BJs-CLUB (800-257-2582).

No annual fee. You don’t have to pay just for having this card, since the annual fee is $0 .

BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card cons

Redemption options are limited. Cash back can’t be redeemed at BJ’s gas stations. And though it can be redeemed at the checkout at BJ’s clubs, it must be for purchases over $20.

Rewards expire. Your cash back is converted to “awards” when you reach $20 worth. Those awards expire six months from the date you earned them.

Membership required. You must be the primary member on a BJ’s Inner Circle membership, which costs $50 a year, to be eligible to apply for the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card .

No sign-up bonus. While many credit cards offer bonus cash back or miles for spending a certain amount on a new card within a specified time period, or a discount off the first purchase with the card, the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card does not.

Foreign transaction fee. If you travel outside the United States, you’re better off taking a card with no foreign transaction fee and leaving this one at home. The BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card charges 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars.

Alternative cashback cards for fuel and groceries

For those who are dedicated BJ’s shoppers, the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card offers substantial savings at BJ’s gas locations and a solid cashback rate on most BJ’s purchases. But if you aren’t devoted to the BJ’s brand, a card such as the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card or the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express might provide more flexibility.

The 10-cent-per-gallon discount at BJ’s gas stations offered by the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card comes out to a valuable savings. For example, if gas costs $2 a gallon, 10 cents off per gallon is a 5% discount. And if gas is $1.65 a gallon, 10 cents off per gallon is roughly a 6% discount.

For drivers who get most of their gas at BJ’s, this savings is a definite plus in favor of carrying the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card . However, for those who tank up at other gas stations, the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card will earn you more than the low cashback rate offered by the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card on gas purchases outside the brand. Since the Go Far points that card earns are worth 1 cent each, you’ll earn a 3% cash back rate on gas purchases.

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express also outearns the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card when it comes to non-BJ’s gas stations. On top of that, it offers the highest cashback rate on U.S. supermarket purchases that we’ve found with any credit card. While it charges a $95 annual fee, if you spend $1,584 a year on purchases eligible for highest cash back rate, you can recoup that amount. And you won’t have to pay for a membership like you do with the BJ’s card.

Is the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card right for you?

Whether or not the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card is a good fit for your wallet depends entirely on how much you shop at BJ’s Warehouse Club and fill your gas tank up at BJ’s gas stations. If those purchases make up a sizable portion of your budget, the BJ’s Perks Plus® Mastercard® Credit Card can help you save money with a competitive cashback rate and a generous gas discount.

However, for those whose routines include shopping at other grocery stores and fueling up at other gas stations, a card such as the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card or the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express will likely offer better rewards for more of your spending.
