I believe the best card whichI have is the CITI Double cash if you pay off you bill each month 2%. If you don't you only get 1% on your purchases.

Think CITI is the best one

The Citi Double Cash Card (2% cash-back) is the card I use when my other no-annual-fee cards only offer 1% cash-back, which happens mostly at discount stores like Aldi or Walmart. I keep a detailed spending record and spend about $6000 at stores that my up-to-5% cards only give 1% at so the extra 1% from Double Cash means $60/year or $600/decade. It all adds up! I'm now getting $660 - $860/yr in Cash Back on avg. spending, using the right card in the right place. My latest purchases were 4% cash-back on gasoline with the Citi Costco Visa, 5% cash-back for tools/screws at Lowes with Discover, and 5% cash-back at a restaurant with Chase Freedom Visa - the latter also gives 5% off Costco and Sams Club through the end of the year. As long as you pay-off you entire credit card statements each month to avoid paying interest and stick to a budget so you don't overspend, it's foolish to pay with cash anymore - things are cheaper with cash-back cards.

The AmEx Blue Cash Everyday card gives 3% cash-back at groceries stores - compared to the 2% AmEx card listed here - plus the both have the same 1% on everything else and no annual fee. Discover Card and Chase Freedom Visa have rotating quarterly 5% cash-back deals that are very worthwhile: gasoline, groceries, hardware stores, restaurants, movies, Costco/Sams Club, Amazon.com, etc. Also no-annual-fee cards. Those two are my most-used credit cards, and I have several to max. my cash-back.

What constitutes a purchase? Does paying a bill, like utilities or hospital bill, count as a purchase?

By: CompareCards | Aug 11, 2016

You will have to check the specific terms and conditions on your credit card to know for sure which transactions count as a purchase, but in most cases, paying bills will count. Typically, the only charges to your credit card that do not count as a purchase are "cash equivalents" like money orders, cash advances, balance transfers, and in some cases, gift cards.

I currently have a Rapid Rewards Visa & get points for airline travel on Southwest. I only travel 2-3 times a year. I do have an annual fee & I pay the balance in full every month. Is there a better card for me?

By: JoeJoe Lenz-Diez | Aug 7, 2016

Yes, any card that has no annual fee,

By: Marc Harrell | Aug 8, 2016

Jeri, Depending on how long you have had that card, I would not close it, because it may be a long trade on your credit report. Only you can be the judge of that. If you like rewards, then I might offer the Amex Senior Gold Charge Account. You pay it off every month and the benefits and rewards beat out all other rewards program. I am not sure if it offers a fee or not but I no they waive it the first year. Also look at the Barclay Ring Card, best rate around on a card, no frills like rewards but 8.25%. I did this professionally for 15 plus year. That southwest account is I want to say a Chase product or at least it was. I would call them and see if they can switch your product to a Slate card and earn rewards to any airlines. Please feel free to ask any questions you have....Jeri Knowledge is power and to ask makes you powerful. Dont ever trust anyone advice on this thread including myself, just check behind what I have said and you will see I am correct.

By: Jack Kirk | Aug 21, 2016

I also have the Chase Rapid Rewards Visa. It is the original one with the $69 annual fee. I use the points for two to travel one time a year across country. I run nearly all of my normal expenses through it so that I can accumulate points. Considering what my air travel would cost, I'm saving $600 - $800 a year. That is a better return than all of the "cash back' cards out there. I would not give up mine...

CapitalOne beats all cards out no hidden agenda Venture card is my pick for my Family and QuikSilver real rewards all the time no waiting on flight seats or your money everyday all the time number one.

By: Lisa Krygier | Sep 21, 2016

But you get a 6000 point bonus every anniversary which with Southwest can easily equal a one way ticket depending where you want to go.

what is considered an excellent credit score?

By: CompareCards | Aug 4, 2016

An excellent credit score is typically considered anything in the mid 700s and up.

By: James A Barnes Jr. | Aug 5, 2016

I agree with the mid-700's and up reply. Here's what tickles me though....I have 3 major cards that gives your credit score every month...they all report around the same time of the month and all three of them uses TransUnion....Last month I received credit scores of....779, 749 & 721....How can I have 3 drastically different scores coming from the same reporting agency around the same time of the month....smh..??? There has to be something I'm missing.....Chucklin'.

By: JoeJoe Lenz-Diez | Aug 7, 2016

anything over 790 is considered excellent.

Am/Ex Story; I had car trouble in the family suburban in Nebraska over Christmas and needed to rent a car to make it to Denver. The only place was a small car dealership. I had a Platinum American Express but they didn't take it, but because I had a Platinum Am/Ex they just gave me a car for 3 days and I paid them cash when I returned. Crazy huh?

what is the best card for someone who pays off his balance every month ?

By: CompareCards | Aug 4, 2016

If you're paying off your balance every month you should look for the credit card that will give you the most rewards for your spending. The Citi Double Cash is an excellent option to start with, but if you spend a lot of money a certain categories, another rewards card might be a better choice. For example the BankAmericard Cash Rewards is an excellent credit card if you spend a lot on gas and the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express is a great choice if you spend a lot on groceries.

By: Marc Harrell | Aug 18, 2016

If you pay the card off in full every month, I disagree with the comment below, no disrespect, Apply for the Amex Gold Charge Card. The rewards and benefits are bye far the best. They waive the annual fee and it is a GREAT CARD... Below they are giving you categories. I don't like that. I did this for Wealth Management clients, The card I recommend you can use points towards anything!

0% Credit Cards & Interest Free Credit Cards

Low interest rate (or 0%) credit cards can save you hundreds of dollars on balance transfers and on routine purchases carried over as credit card balances. Or you may simply want to be rewarded with a preferential interest rate as acknowledgement for good credit history and responsible debt management. Whatever your goals or motivation, zero percent or low interest credit cards can help you maintain the lowest rates available to individuals with excellent to good credit. You can find out more about credit score here.

Keep in mind that there are two main categories of low rate credit cards, namely those that offer a Variable APR and those that give you a Fixed APR.  Just like with variable versus fixed rate mortgages, a fixed rate APR will remain relatively stable through the course of the loan. If your card company decides to raise it – which is somewhat rare – they will first notify you of that change according to Federal law requirements. With a variable rate, your APR is tied to a prevailing rate such as the Prime Interest Rate. If the prime rate increases then your APR will most likely follow in a similar fashion.

Generally speaking, credit card companies and banks will extend either 6 or 21 month offers – within the 0% to 3.99% annual interest rate range. That can generate a considerable discount when normal APRs are averaging around 15% or higher. Once the introductory promotional period expires, the APR on a low interest credit card or interest free credit card may revert to the regular interest rate. Of course the ideal balance is a credit card that offers a great near term rate followed by an attractive, competitively priced low interest rate for the long term.

The interest rate charged on your credit card is widely regarded as the single most important component of your card. That’s because it determines the major cost for you to borrow or roll over balances and pay them off over time instead of all at once or within the same month that you make purchases. That’s why getting a zero percent or low interest credit card can be huge financial boon, no matter what your credit card usage patterns or money management strategies may be.
