Expert Reviews

From the CompareCards.com Editorial Team

The Control™ Prepaid Mastercard® has some unique features, such as the ability to link to a high-yield savings account and earn cashback rewards from participating merchants.

However, the card is not without fees. The Control™ Prepaid Mastercard® charges $7.95 a month, but falls to $5 a month if you use direct deposit for your payroll or government benefits to load at least $500 on the card each month. Plus, there is an ATM fee of $2.50 for withdrawals, but if you use the card as a debit transaction, you can opt for cash back at the register from participating retailers to avoid ATM fees.

This card is not a credit card and won’t help you build credit, but prepaid cards can be useful for those looking for a card that won’t involve a credit check or charge interest or late fees.

The Bottom Line

The Control™ Prepaid Mastercard®’s big draw is for those looking for a prepaid card that offers rewards, but know that it’s a program that you need to opt into with qualifying merchants. Any rewards are credited to your account. Plus, you can link your card to a high-yield savings account. If you plan to use direct deposit of $500 or more to load the card monthly, there is a discounted monthly fee of $5 from the regular monthly fee of $7.50. To avoid ATM fees, you can use your card at a retailer as a debit transaction to get cash back.

The Good

No credit check required. Free direct deposit. Cashback rewards.

The Not so Good

This is a prepaid card that won’t help build your credit score. You’ll be charged a monthly fee, along with ATM withdrawal fees and for cash reloads, as well as numerous one-time fees.
