Military families are probably familiar with USAA’s checking and savings accounts, auto and home loans and insurance offerings, so it’s likely you’d look to the bank for a credit card, too. You must be one of the following to join USAA: active or former military, an eligible family member or a cadet or midshipman.
But once you’re in, you may be searching for a USAA-branded credit card. One option could be the Wounded Warrior Project USAA Rewards™ Visa Signature® Card. This card appeals to those who want to support the Wounded Warrior Project. Formed in 2003, the group offers services to veterans suffering from physical and mental injuries caused during military conflicts since Sept. 11, 2001.
USAA Bank will contribute $5 for every new card account opened, $1 for each card renewal and 0.30% of each purchase made on the card.
This card doesn’t come with the bells and whistles offered by other cards in the cashback rewards category. There’s a small sign-up bonus where you get 2,500 bonus points with your first purchase. The points per $1 spent are small compared with other cards. But you do feel good knowing that whenever you spend, your money is going toward the Wounded Warriors Project’s efforts to help those who have so ably served their country.
Where the Wounded Warrior Project USAA Rewards™ Visa Signature® Card stands out in its category
The biggest benefit of this card is accommodations made for active-duty personnel when they are either deployed or have a permanent change of station (PCS). The card normally has a regular 12.40% - 27.40% Variable purchase APR, but it drops to 4% on all balances for up to 12 months during deployment or PCS. After 12 months, the regular APR applies.
Under the provisions of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) — which provides money-saving financial relief and protections — cardmembers not only get the 12-month 4% APR, but they also get money-saving financial relief and protections on credit card interest rates. SCRA also restricts or limits actions against military personnel currently serving on active duty.
Cardmembers can redeem points for cash back credited to their card account or deposited to their USAA checking or savings account. You can also redeem points at USAA.com or on the USAA app for airline travel, merchandise, gift cards or a cruise. And you can use your points to donate to your favorite military affiliate group. There’s no limits on the points you earn and they don’t expire.
Where the Wounded Warrior Project USAA Rewards™ Visa Signature® Card falls short in its category
There are cards that offer much higher sign-up bonuses than this card, where you only Get 2,500 bonus points with your first purchase. The card’s points per $1 spent is pretty low in the travel, dining, gas and grocery categories when you compare it with a card like the Uber Visa Card, which offers 5% back in Uber Cash on Uber rides, Uber Eats, and JUMP, 3% in Uber Cash on restaurants, bars, hotels, and airfare, and 1% back in Uber Cash on all other purchases
Additional card benefits

- Collision damage waiver that covers physical damage and theft to most rental vehicles when you use the card.
- Extended warranty boosts your manufacturer’s or U.S. store brand warranties for up to a year.
- Travel accident insurance provides coverage for you and your family members when your card is used to purchase common carrier travel tickets.
