Who the card is best for

If you’re a military member or eligible family member looking for a low-rate card, you may benefit from the USAA® Rate Advantage Visa Platinum® Card. This card has a low starting APR, but beware the range is quite wide — 8.90% - 25.90% Variable. If you often carry a balance month to month and qualify for the starting APR, this card can be helpful. However, if you’re looking for a rewards card, check out other cards offered by USAA or our lists of the best rewards and cashback cards.

Where this card stands out in its category

Potential for a low-interest rate. The APR range for this card is 8.90% - 25.90% Variable. Cardholders who qualify for the lowest rate and end up carrying a balance can see lower interest charges compared with those who receive the highest rate.

USAA provides all its credit cardholders with military interest rate benefits. If you’re an active duty military member and are deployed while your account is in good standing, you may receive a reduced interest rate of 4%. Purchases made before active duty and after may be covered if you qualify. This is a helpful feature that can save you from racking up high interest charges while you serve, and is a better rate than the 6% provided by the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA). Find out more about this benefit here.

Where this card falls short in its category

No rewards program. This card lacks a rewards program, so you won’t be able to earn points or cash back on your purchases. However, many of the other USAA cards offer rewards programs, so you may want to check those out if you’re looking for a rewards card.

Additional card benefits

The USAA® Rate Advantage Visa Platinum® Card has several added perks accessible by calling 866-200-9866:

  • Rental car insurance*: When you rent an eligible car for 15 consecutive days or less, you may be covered for damage or theft, reasonable loss of use charges and towing charges.
  • Travel accident insurance*: Pay for your trip with your card and you may receive coverage for accidental death or dismemberment up to a maximum of $250,000.
  • Baggage delay insurance*: Use your card to pay for your trip fare and if your baggage is delayed for more than four hours; you may be reimbursed for incidentals up to $100 a day for three days.

*Terms Apply. Refer to the guide to benefits for more detail.

Compare it with the USAA® Rewards™ Visa Signature® Card

If you want to earn rewards, check out the USAA® Rewards™ Visa Signature® Card.

The USAA® Rewards™ Visa Signature® Card has a rewards program where you can earn 2x points per dollar spent on gas and dining and earn one point for every dollar spent on all purchases. This rate is ideal for cardholders who frequently drive and dine out. In comparison, the USAA® Rate Advantage Visa Platinum® Card has no rewards.

Looking at the interest ranges for each card, they’re not much different. The USAA® Rate Advantage Visa Platinum® Card is slightly lower with a 8.90% - 25.90% Variable APR while the USAA® Rewards™ Visa Signature® Card has a 11.90% - 27.90% Variable APR. This difference may not be a big deal since the rate you receive depends on creditworthiness and other factors — meaning if you apply for the USAA® Rate Advantage Visa Platinum® Card, you may not qualify for the lowest rate. Plus, all USAA cards have the ability to qualify for the military interest rate benefits.

Ultimately, it comes down to whether you want to earn rewards or not. If the answer is yes, the USAA® Rewards™ Visa Signature® Card is a good option, especially if you spend on gas and restaurant food. But, if you want a more basic card, the USAA® Rate Advantage Visa Platinum® Card is a decent choice.

Here’s a breakdown of the key features of each card:

USAA® Rate Advantage Visa Platinum® Card USAA® Rewards™ Visa Signature® Card
Annual Fee $0 $0
Regular Purchase APR 8.90% - 25.90% Variable 11.90% - 27.90% Variable
Rewards Enjoy USAA's lowest rate card, Pay no annual fee, no penalty APR & no foreign transaction fee Earn 2X points per dollar spent on gas and dining and earn one point for every dollar spent on all purchases

Bottom line

The USAA® Rate Advantage Visa Platinum® Card is a pretty basic card that lacks rewards, though it may be beneficial for people who qualify for the low interest rate — 8.90% - 25.90% Variable APR — and carry a balance. If you want a USAA card with rewards and a potentially low APR (though not as low as the USAA® Rate Advantage Visa Platinum® Card), check out other USAA cards.
