If you frequently purchase makeup, perfume, hair care products and other cosmetics from Ulta Beauty store, it may be worthwhile to consider opening an Ultamate Rewards® Credit Card.

In addition to receiving a special discount on your first purchase, the card lets you earn rewards on all your Ulta Beauty purchases, which can be redeemed for merchandise at Ulta Beauty.

While the opportunity to earn rewards and special discounts on beauty purchases may be appealing, a card that offers cash back on every purchase that can be used anywhere, like the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer, may actually be a better fit for you. We’ll compare the rewards programs of both cards to see which may be a better choice for you.

Ultamate Rewards® Credit Card pros

Discount at Ulta Beauty. Get 20% off your first purchase at Ulta Beauty if approved.

No annual fee. The Ultamate Rewards® Credit Card charges an annual fee of $0.

Ultamate Rewards® Credit Card cons

Limited to Ulta purchases. The Ultamate Rewards® Credit Card can only be used to make purchases at Ulta Beauty stores and at Ulta.com.

What are Ulta points worth? Ultamate rewards can only be redeemed for dollars off Ulta merchandise; however, the value of the rewards varies based on the amount of points you have. For example, you can redeem 100 points for $3 off your purchase and 2,000 points for $125 off your purchase.

Ultamate rewards points Dollars off merchandise
100 $3
250 $8
500 $17.50
750 $30
1,000 $50
2,000 $125

High interest rate. The Ultamate Rewards® Credit Card does not offer a 0% introductory APR on purchases. So if you plan to carry a balance on your card, you will be charged a high APR of 27.49% variable.

Compare it to the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer

If you don’t want to be limited to earning and redeeming rewards at Ulta Beauty, you should take a look at a card that offers rewards on every purchase you make, like the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer.

As you can see from the table below, the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer lets you earn 2% cash back on purchases: 1% when you buy plus 1% as you pay. Rewards can be redeemed for statement credits, direct deposit, checks or points.

However, if you want to transfer a balance from a different credit card, you should use the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer. The card offers an introductory APR of 0% for 18 months on balance transfers, then a regular APR of 13.99% – 23.99% (variable) applies.

Also, if you plan to finance a purchase and pay it off over time, the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer will be a better fit — especially if you qualify for the lower APR. By comparison, the Ultamate Rewards® Credit Card charges a flat APR of 27.49% variable on purchases.

That said, we do recommend paying your credit card balance in full each month.
