Where the Susan G. Komen® Cash Rewards Visa® credit card from Bank of America falls short in its category

When you read the fine print of this card, you discover that Bank of America only donates its $3 and 0.08% on purchases made in the first 90 days the account is open. After that, it only donates $3 a year when you renew the Susan G. Komen® Cash Rewards Visa® credit card from Bank of America as long it doesn’t have a zero balance at the time of renewal.

The card lets you earn 1% cash back on every purchase, 2% at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, and 3% on gas for the first $2,500 in combined grocery/wholesale club/gas purchases each quarter. Note, if you spend more than $2,500 a quarter in grocery/wholesale club/gas purchases, it drops to 1% cash back.

The Susan G. Komen® Cash Rewards Visa® credit card from Bank of America doesn’t come with any travel or purchase perks. The only real benefit you get is a free FICO® score every month.

Compare it with the U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Travel Rewards Visa Signature® card

Maybe you want a card with more robust points per $1 spent. Or maybe you want to choose which charities get your donations when you spend with a card. A good alternative to the Susan G. Komen® Cash Rewards Visa® credit card from Bank of America is the U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Travel Rewards Visa Signature® card.

New cardmembers Earn 25,000 bonus FlexPoints worth $375 on airfare, hotel stays, car rentals and more. Just spend $2,000 in eligible Net Purchases (purchases minus credits and returns) on your card within the first four months of account opening. Those bonus points convert to $375 that can be spent on things like airfare, hotel stays and car rentals.

If you’re charitably-minded, the big takeaway with the U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Travel Rewards Visa Signature® card is Each billing cycle you earn 1 FlexPoint on all purchases and an additional 1 FlexPoint in one select category (airlines, gas stations, grocery stores, charitable and social service organizations, or cellular services provider merchant) for a total of 2 FlexPoints that you spend the most in. There are no limits on the number of FlexPoints you can earn.

While there are cards out there that give more points for dining, gas and travel, the U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Travel Rewards Visa Signature® card does offer some great perks for those who take to the skies regularly. It starts by giving you a $25 airline allowance every time you redeem your FlexPoints to book travel, or on things like baggage fees, in-flight food, drinks or a seat upgrade. You also get 12 free Gogo® Inflight Wi-Fi passes a year.

Your FlexPoints can also be redeemed for gift cards, merchandise, magazines and event tickets. If you choose to get cash back, it can be redeemed as a statement credit or a deposit made to a U.S. Bank saving, checking or money market account.

If you’re going to use your points for travel, they must be redeemed in the Rewards Center online. If you decide to book travel by phone, you’ll be charged $25.

Be sure to use your FlexPoints, because they expire exactly at the end of the calendar quarter five years from the date on which they were earned. They are redeemed or expire on a first-in, first-out basis, but you want to keep an eye on them so none are lost.

Bottom line

There are cards that offer more for travel and dining spending, without caps like the Susan G. Komen® Cash Rewards Visa® credit card from Bank of America. And here’s a catch to consider: Donations to the nonprofit are only done on the first 90 days’ worth of spending on this card.

So you may want to consider a card like the U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Travel Rewards Visa Signature® card. This card gives you a choice of charities you can help. Plus it makes a donation every time you spend on the card, not just for a limited time.
