You’re running a business and find yourself flying on Southwest Airlines routinely. Why not tie your credit card to the carrier you fly the most? Aligning yourself with a specific airline and taking advantage of a co-branded credit card is a great way to maximize rewards.
The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card is designed to reward businesses that use it to pay for company spending.
This card can earn you points you can use for flights, along with Southwest-approved hotel and car rental partners. Just keep in mind, if you need to fly outside of the airline’s limited route network, you won’t be able to use the points earned on this card to do it, since Southwest doesn’t have partnerships with other airlines. If you frequently fly on other airlines, you might be better off choosing a card that provides you with more flexible redemption options.
But if you’re loyal to Southwest, that may not matter to you. Read on to find out more about the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card and all it has to offer.

Where the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card stands out in its category
The sign-up bonus. Earn 60,000 points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open.
You also earn 6,000 bonus points after every cardmember anniversary. The bonus points you earn after hitting the card’s spending requirement were enough for two people to fly from Baltimore to Montego Bay, Jamaica, under the airline’s cheapest fare available, as of this writing.
Earn rewards. The rewards are simple — 2 points per $1 spent on Southwest® purchases and Rapid Rewards® Hotel and Car Rental Partner purchases. 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases. That includes using the card to pay for in-flight beverages, Southwest gift cards and Southwest Vacations® packages, along with participating Rapid Rewards® hotel and rental car partners.
Redeem rewards. Once you earn points, you can redeem them for Southwest Airlines flights, gift cards, merchandise, hotel stays and rental cars. You earn points on everything you buy on the card with no limits. There are no limits on airline reward seats and no blackout dates to more than 100 destinations in the U.S., Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Your points don’t expire as long as your card account is open.
Elite status. Earn 1,500 Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) when you spend at least $10,000 on the card, at a maximum of $100,000 a year. You can use TQPs to help you earn Rapid Rewards® A-List or A-List Preferred elite status on the airline.
A-List status gives you benefits that help make your business and personal travel easier, like priority check-in, dedicated security lanes where available, priority boarding, a 25% points bonus on tickets booked through Southwest and a dedicated customer service line. A-List Preferred status gives you all the benefits of A-List, along with a 100% points bonus and free in-flight Wi-Fi, which will allow you to work as you fly. Business travelers will also appreciate that A-List status allows for free same-day standby on flights, since Southwest charges the cost of an Anytime fare for any flight changes on their lowest Wanna Get Away fares.
The Companion Pass. If you are a frequent traveler, you have the chance to earn this great benefit. If you fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 110,000 qualifying points in a calendar year, you’ll be able to choose one person to fly with you, free of airline charges (minus taxes and fees) every time you buy or use points for a flight.
Employee cards. You can also add employee cards at no additional cost, plus set up spending limits on each of them. All the points earned on the cards help you earn rewards faster.
“Transfarency”. The card comes with the airline’s key benefits, including your first two checked bags for free and not paying a change fee if you need to switch flights (but a fare difference may apply).
Where the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card falls short in its category
Annual fee. This card comes with a $99 annual fee. You’ll have to ask yourself if the perks and benefits balance with the card’s cost.
Points you earn. While you do earn more points per $1 spent on flights and other Southwest-related spending, the points per $1 spent in other categories important to business travelers — non-partner flights and hotels, dining, gas and office/business supplies — is lower than other cards in the travel category.
Using your points. While it’s nice that you get a lot of flexibility to spend them on Southwest flights, you’re limited on where you can go, since it doesn’t have partnerships with other global carriers. Because of its limited route map, it means if you wanted to jet off to Paris, you couldn’t do it on Southwest.
No sharing. If you have get A-List or A-List Preferred status, you can’t share your priority boarding perks with others.
Additional card benefits
- Lost luggage reimbursement.
- Baggage delay insurance.

Let’s say that Southwest Airlines isn’t your carrier of choice, or maybe you want more flexibility on which airlines to use your earned miles on. The Capital One® Spark® Miles for Business could be a good alternative for your business needs.
Earn a one-time bonus of 50,000 miles once you spend $4,500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening. From there, you earn a simple 2 Miles per $1 on every purchase, everywhere. Your miles don’t expire and there’s no maximum on how many you can earn. The card’s annual fee is $0 intro for first year; $95 after that.
The card gives you several options when it comes time to redeem your miles. You can book travel through the travel website of your choice or a travel agent and pay for it with the Capital One® Spark® Miles for Business card. Then go to capitalone.com or call the Rewards Center and use the Purchase Eraser® feature to get an account credit for part or all of the cost of your travel, including airlines, hotels, rail lines, car rental agencies, limousine services, bus lines, cruise lines, taxi cabs, travel agents and timeshares. There are no blackout dates or seat restrictions on airlines.
You can go to capitalone.com or call the Rewards Center to book flights, car rentals or hotels and use your miles to pay for your travel. For example, if your hotel costs $200 a night, includes taxes, surcharges, and fees, you would need 20,000 miles to pay for it. You can also redeem your miles for cash as a check or account credit, gift cards and more. The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card card doesn’t have this same flexibility when it comes to redeeming points.
You are able to add employee cards at no additional cost, plus earn all the rewards from their purchases. The card comes with tools to keep track of charges and payments, including an itemized report of spending and the ability to securely download purchase records into multiple formats, including Quicken®, QuickBooksTM and Excel®.
The perks on this card are a little more robust than the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card. They include purchase security, extended warranty protection, auto rental collision damage waiver and travel and emergency assistance like ticket replacement and legal or medical referrals. It also gives you access to Visa® SavingsEdge, where you can use your enrolled card at participating merchants and save up to 15%.
