Whether you’re planning an upcoming road trip or you simply drive to and from work every day, a fuel rewards credit card — like the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard® — can help you save money when doing so.

The card is currently running a special promotion on your first five Shell fuel purchases made by April 20, 2020: New accounts only. With this limited time offer, you get 5¢/gal with Fuel Rewards® Gold Status and 25¢/gal with the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Credit Card for a total of 30¢/gal (up to 20 gallons). Apply by 12/31/19. Note, upon card approval, you will automatically be enrolled in the Fuel Rewards program and instantly receive Gold Status.

Additionally, cardholders earn an ongoing 10% Shell rebates on your first $1,200 Shell non-fuel purchases (per year), 2% Shell rebates on your first $10,000 Dining and Groceries purchases (per year), 1% Shell rebates on other qualifying purchases.

Rebates will be applied as a statement credit against Shell purchases made using your card in future billing cycles.

In this review, we’ll break down the pros and cons of the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard®, as well as show how it compares to another credit card that offers fuel rewards: the ExxonMobil Smart Card.

In this article:

Where the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard® stands out

Limited-time promotion. New accounts only. With this limited time offer, you get 5¢/gal with Fuel Rewards® Gold Status and 25¢/gal with the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Credit Card for a total of 30¢/gal (up to 20 gallons). Apply by 12/31/19.

Rebates on non-fuel purchases. With the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard®, you can earn Shell rebates on a variety of purchases. Get 10% Shell rebates on your first $1,200 Shell non-fuel purchases (per year), 2% Shell rebates on your first $10,000 Dining and Groceries purchases (per year), 1% Shell rebates on other qualifying purchases.

Annual fee. The Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard® comes with a $0 annual fee.

Additional Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard® benefits

  • Receive automatic Fuel Rewards Gold status upon card approval.
  • With Gold status, get additional savings when you shop online and book travel with the card.
  • Gold status also offers specially marked Shell items, such as coffee, snacks and gift cards.

Where the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard® falls short

Restrictions on bonus savings. The 30 cents per gallon savings can only be applied to your first five Shell fuel purchases (up to 20 gallons per purchase) through April 30, 2020. Also, you must apply for the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard® by Dec. 31, 2019 to take advantage of the offer.

Redemption options. Because your rebates can only be redeemed as statement credits against Shell purchases, this card is not ideal if you don’t frequent Shell gas stations.

High APR. If you don’t pay your card balance in full each month, you will be charged a high APR of 28.24% variable.

Compare it to the ExxonMobil Smart Card

If you prefer purchasing gas from ExxonMobil gas stations over Shell stations, the ExxonMobil Smart Card is a good alternative. The card lets you save 6 cents per gallon on fuel purchases at Exxon and Mobil gas station locations throughout the U.S.

Get 12 cents off every gallon of Synergy fuel for the first 2 months after account open date when you apply online or 50 cents off the first 2 months when you apply through the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ app (valid through 12/31/19).

See how the cards compare side by side in the table below.

Regular APR for purchases 28.24% variable 28.24% variable

Like the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard®, the ExxonMobil Smart Card comes with a $0 annual fee and a high regular purchase APR of 28.24% variable.

However, unlike the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard® — which lets you earn rebates on non-fuel purchases, such as dining and groceries — the ExxonMobil Smart Card only offers rebates on fuel purchases at ExxonMobil gas stations.

That said, if you apply by Dec. 31, 2019, you have the potential to save up to $0.50/gallon on fuel purchases with the ExxonMobil Smart Card for the first two months (when you apply via the ExxonMobil Rewards+ app), while the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard® lets you save up to $0.30/gallon (up to 20 gallons per purchase) on your first five Shell fuel purchases through April 30, 2020.

The bottom line

With the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard®, you can save a generous amount on fuel purchases through the end of the year, as well as earn rebates on dining and grocery purchases. But if you’re partial to ExxonMobil gas stations, the ExxonMobil Smart Card will be a better fit for you.
