More Info

If you travel regularly for business, this card gives you access to the global route network of Delta and the SkyTeam alliance of 19 other global carriers that serve more than 1,000 destinations. And thanks to its Delta connection, you also get perks designed to upgrade your travel.

Because the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express is a premium card, it comes with the travel and purchase benefits, along with access to 24/7 assistance and help with business-related issues, that you’d expect with American Express. And more importantly, the card lets you earn bonus miles that go toward that all-important Medallion status on Delta, which unlocks even more travel perks.

Give this card strong consideration if you are a Delta frequent flyer. But compare it to other options, too — there are other travel-branded credit cards that offer more points per $1 spent in business-friendly categories like hotels, office supplies and phone/internet access.

Where the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express stands out in its category

Welcome offer. The card tempts new cardmembers with a welcome offer to 80,000 bonus miles and 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after you spend $6,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months.

Rewards. You Earn 2 Miles per dollar spent on purchases made directly with Delta. Earn 1 mile on every eligible dollar spent on purchases. Miles don't expire. Delta purchases include delta.com, Delta Vacation® packages, phone reservations, ticket counters, seat upgrades and selection, Delta Sky Club® membership or passes, pre-purchased meals and in-flight purchases of food, alcoholic beverages and audio headsets on Delta-operated flights. Redeem your miles for reward travel, seat and cabin upgrades, Delta Sky Club membership, a Delta Vacations® package, exclusive SkyMiles Experiences®, Delta gift cards and merchandise in the SkyMiles® Marketplace.

Ability to earn MQMs. You have to love a card that comes with the chance to earn Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs), based on the distance flown and your fare class. Once you get elite Medallion status, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express helps you keep it. If you spend $25,000 or more per calendar year on the card, you’ll be awarded 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 MQMs. If you spend $50,000 or more, you’ll earn another 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 MQMs.

If you don’t hit your Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) threshold — based on how much you spend on Delta and its partner airlines — between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, you can still earn elite status. If you earn the required MQMs or Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) — based on the number of flights you take — and use the card to spend at least $25,000 on the card within a qualification year, you’ll be able to keep your elite status.

Airline perks. Road warriors want VIP treatment that makes travel easier, and the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express delivers. It comes with a free checked bag for you and up to nine others traveling on the same reservation, which adds up to a savings of $50 each per round-trip flight. You and up to nine companions on the same reservation also get priority Zone 1 boarding, the same level that silver Medallion members receive.

Once onboard your flight, you receive a 20% discount as a statement credit when you use the card to buy food, beverages, and audio headsets. You also earn a free domestic economy class round-trip companion certificate (excluding taxes and fees) every year you renew the card.

Discounted lounge access. If you need an oasis away from crowded airport terminal seating areas, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express comes with Delta Sky Club lounge access at a discounted rate of $29 per person, which includes up to two guests. Once inside, you get Wifi, free food and beverages, flight assistance, business centers, conference rooms and showers, where available.

Employees can earn points, too. Run your business with this card by issuing up to 99 employee cards for free (these also earn points), designating an account manager to keep track of spending, using spend manager to upload receipts and notes via a laptop or mobile phone and connecting your account to Quickbooks to handle accounting tasks.

Where the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express falls short in its category

You can’t transfer your miles to other airline or hotel loyalty programs. The spending required to earn MQMs that go toward elite Medallion status on Delta may be high for some. There are other travel-branded cards that offer more points per $1 spent on things valued by business travelers, like dining, hotels, business supplies and phone/internet access.

You don’t get free access to Delta’s Sky Club airport lounges. And beginning on Jan. 1, 2019, Delta Sky Club members may only use the lounge if they’re doing same-day ticketed air travel on Delta or its partner airlines. Members will no longer have access to Delta’s partner lounges.

20% in-flight discount is limited. You can’t get a discount for Wi-Fi access.

Companion Pass Taxes & Fees: The card’s annual companion pass is only good in the 48 contiguous states. Taxes and fees of no more than $75 for round-trip domestic flights must be paid when it’s used.

Additional card benefits

  • Baggage insurance plan
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Roadside assistance hotline
  • Car rental loss and damage insurance
  • Global Assist® hotline
  • Extended warranty
  • Purchase protection

New cardmembers can earn 80,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. After meeting the spending required to get it, you have $1,000 that you can spend in the Chase Ultimate Rewards® portal.

You Earn 3 points per $1 on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases on travel, shipping purchases, Internet, cable and phone services, advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines each account anniversary year. Earn 1 point per $1 on all other purchases—with no limit to the amount you can earn. You earn more points than the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express in categories that are most important to businesses. And you can earn 20,000 bonus points a year for referring up to five business owners and they are approved for the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card.

A big benefit for business owners who have the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card is earning 25% more value for their points when you redeem them for travel booked through the Chase Ultimate Rewards® website. There are no blackout dates or travel restrictions if you book through it.

Get more flexibility for your points by transferring them 1:1 toward nine major airline and four hotel loyalty programs. Redeem points for cash, gift cards, travel, products or services and at Amazon.com. Your points don’t expire as long as your account remains open.

You can issue cards to employees at no cost, earn points under their accounts and set limits on each card. The card comes with perks that business travelers appreciate, like trip cancellation/trip interruption insurance, roadside dispatch, auto rental collision damage waiver, cell phone protection, purchase protection and extended warranty protection. But unlike the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express , this card doesn’t give you access to a concierge service.

But if you want that VIP airport and airline experience, that won’t happen with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, since it doesn’t offer things like priority boarding, a free checked bag, in-flight discounts and airport lounge access like the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express does.

With these two cards, it’s all about what’s most important to you. If you’re a Delta frequent flyer who wants travel perks and ways to keep their elite status, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express may be the card for you. But if you want to choose the airline you want to fly the most and you want more points per $1 spent in key business categories, then the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card may be a better alternative.
