If you regularly purchase L.L.Bean clothing, footwear, travel accessories, camping gear and other outdoor equipment, the L.L.Bean® Mastercard® offers a nice cashback program.

Unlike many store credit cards, which only allow cardholders to earn rewards on items purchased with that particular brand, the L.L.Bean® Mastercard® offers rewards on dining and gas purchases, as well as at L.L.Bean stores and llbean.com. Earn 4% in Bean Bucks® at L.L.Bean, 2% in Bean Bucks® at restaurants and gas stations and 1% in Bean Bucks® on all other purchases.

Bean Bucks® are each equivalent to $1 in savings and can be applied toward future L.L.Bean purchases. So, for example, if you spend $100 with the card at L.L.Bean at the 4% cashback rate, you’ll earn $4 in Bean Bucks®.

We break down the pros and cons of the L.L.Bean® Mastercard®, and show how it compares to the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer, which also offers rewards on every purchase.

L.L.Bean® Mastercard® pros

Sign-up bonus. Earn a 15% discount on your first L.L.Bean purchase upon card approval.

This discount does not apply to shipping charges, return labels, gift cards, engraving, monogramming, alterations, gift cards, private lessons in the Outdoor Discovery Programs, custom adventures, adventure trips or youth programs.

Rewards rate. Earn 4% in Bean Bucks® at L.L.Bean, 2% in Bean Bucks® at restaurants and gas stations and 1% in Bean Bucks® on all other purchases.

Note, the following purchases do not qualify for the 2% rewards rate: gas purchased at superstores, supermarkets, convenience stores and warehouse clubs and fuel purchased for use for non-automobile purposes, as well as purchases made at bakeries and certain restaurants or cafes inside of department stores, grocery or warehouse clubs will not qualify for the restaurant category.

Annual fee. The L.L.Bean® Mastercard® comes with a $0 annual fee.

Additional L.L.Bean® Mastercard® benefits:

  • Free shipping when you use your L.L.Bean® Mastercard® or Bean Bucks® to pay for your L.L.Bean purchase.
  • Free returns on items purchased using your L.L.Bean® Mastercard® or Bean Bucks®.
  • Complimentary monogramming for eligible items purchased using your L.L.Bean® Mastercard® or Bean Bucks®.

L.L.Bean® Mastercard® cons

No intro APR on purchases. If you want to finance a large purchase – such as a kayak or skis –  and pay it off over time, the L.L.Bean® Mastercard® is not ideal, since it doesn’t offer a 0% intro APR on purchases.

With the L.L.Bean® Mastercard®, if you don’t pay your balance in full each month, you will be subject to an ongoing APR of 13.99%- 19.99% variable.

Rewards expiration. Your Bean Bucks® rewards will expire if you don’t use your L.L.Bean® Mastercard® at least one time every 24 months.

Limited redemption options. Unlike many traditional cashback credit cards, which allow you to redeem rewards for statement credits, checks, gift cards and more, the L.L.Bean® Mastercard® only lets cardholders redeem rewards towards purchases at L.LBean and llbean.com.

Compare it to the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer

If you want to earn cashback rewards on every purchase, but don’t want to be restricted to redeeming those rewards at L.L.Bean stores, you may want to consider the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer.

The Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer provides a rewards structure where cardholders earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. Cash back can be redeemed for a check, statement credit or credit to a linked account once your cash rewards balance equals $25 or more. You can also convert cashback rewards to ThankYou® points when you have a minimum cash rewards balance of $1, which can be redeemed for travel, gift cards or even payments toward a mortgage or student loan.

Which credit card is best for me?

If you frequently shop at L.L.Bean or llbean.com, the L.L.Bean® Mastercard® allows you to earn rewards that can be used to help offset the cost of future L.L.Bean purchases. Additionally, the $0 annual fee card offers benefits such as free shipping and free returns.

But if you want more flexibility in how you can use your rewards, the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer may be a better fit, since it doesn’t limit you to redeeming rewards at one particular store. Additionally, the card’s balance transfer offer lets you transfer a balance without paying interest for an extended period of time – which can potentially save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in interest payments in the long run.
