If you like to manage your money with a prepaid debit card and do a lot of your grocery shopping at Kroger, The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card gives you a unique opportunity to earn rewards while doing both. There is a monthly maintenance fee, but the rewards you’ll earn can help offset that.

Be aware that this isn’t a credit card, nor is it a traditional debit card linked to a checking account. For details, check out our guide on what you should know about prepaid cards.

There’s also a Mastercard version — The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Mastercard, but there are no differences between the two cards.

Let’s dive in and take a look at how to get the best value out of this card.

In this article:

Where The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card stands out

Earn rewards. This card offers 3 points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases within the Kroger family of brands, 2 points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases on non-Kroger brands inside the Kroger family of stores, and 1 point per $1 spent elsewhere. Earn $5 for every 1000 points earned to use toward free groceries! Terms apply. There’s a monthly fee of $4.95, so you’ll essentially be breaking even if you earn 1,000 points each month. If you’re earning at the 3X rate for each $1 spent, you’ll have to spend about $333.34 in order to hit 1,000 points.

If you make a lot of purchases on non-Kroger-brand items at Kroger, or if you’re shopping somewhere other than Kroger, be aware that you won’t be earning the 3X rate. In that case, you’ll have to spend more in order to build up 1,000 points.

Reload for free with direct deposit. Most options for reloading this card come with a fee. However, you can add money via direct deposit at no cost. You’ll be able to load up to $5,000 from your paycheck onto The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card by direct deposit, as long as it doesn’t exceed maximum card limits (see fee schedule for details). Plus, earn a one-time $10 credit within 30 days after a successful first direct deposit is made to a personalized card account.

Get a discount on fuel. When you’re fueling up at a gas station in the Kroger family of stores, you can get an extra $0.05 off per gallon. Make sure to present The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card to the cashier for payment before you fill up in order to avoid hold charges.

No credit check. If you prefer to avoid a hard inquiry on your credit report, you can rest easy knowing there’s no credit check required to obtain The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card.

Additional benefits

Get the card for free online. There’s a cost of $1.50 to get this card at a physical store, but if you apply for it online, there’s no cost.

No overdraft fees. There are no overdraft fees and you can’t spend more than you’ve loaded to the card.

High daily direct deposit limit. You can load up to $5,000 per day, up to The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card’s maximum balance of $10,000.

Where The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card falls short

Prepaid cards in general charge a lot of fees, so The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card isn’t unique in that respect. But it’s still something you should be aware of before getting the card.

There are quite a few fees with The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card that can chip away at your funds:

Fees Dollar Amount
Getting the card (in-store) $1.50
Monthly maintenance fee monthly fee of $4.95
Cash reload (swipe at Kroger family stores) $3
Cash reload (Visa Readylink) Varies by retailer
Cash reload (ReCharge Card) $3
Cash Reload (Mastercard rePower) $4.95
ATM withdrawal $2.50 in network
$2.50 out of network
$2.50 international
ATM balance inquiry $0.50 in network
$0.50 out of network
Card replacement $3
Card replacement expedited delivery $15
International transaction fee 3%

It’s also worth noting that, being a prepaid card, The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card won’t build your credit history.

Compare it with the Walmart MoneyCard®

While prepaid cards that offer rewards aren’t common, the Walmart MoneyCard® is one that does. That makes it a good competitor to compare to The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card.

Here’s how the two line up against each other:

The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card Walmart MoneyCard®
Card opening fee $1.50 (get the card online to avoid paying this fee) $1
Monthly fee Monthly fee of $4.95 $5 per month, waived if you loaded $1,000 or more in the previous month
Reload fee $0 to $4.95 depending on how you reload. $0 to $5.95 depending on how you reload.
ATM withdrawal fee $2.50 (you may also be charged a fee by the ATM operator) $2.50 (you may also be charged a fee by the ATM operator)
Replacement card fee $3 $3

Like The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card, the Walmart MoneyCard® lets you load money via direct deposit for no fee.

One place where the Walmart MoneyCard® pulls ahead is that it doesn’t limit you to Walmart brands for the 3% cashback rate, whereas to earn highest rewards earnings on The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card, your purchase must be something in the Kroger family of brands. However, the Walmart MoneyCard® does limit you to $75 in cashback rewards per reward year. And it’s important to note that you only get the 3% rate for shopping at Walmart.com, not in physical Walmart stores.

When it comes to being able to use your card to get cash from an ATM, The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card is the clear winner. The daily limit is $1,220 — though you are limited to three transactions per day and can’t get more than $1,025 out per transaction. Meanwhile, the Walmart MoneyCard® only lets you withdraw $500 per day from an ATM.

The bottom line

For those who shop a lot at Kroger, The Kroger Rewards Prepaid Visa® Card offers value. It’s nice to have the opportunity to earn rewards, which some competing prepaid cards don’t offer.

However, this is still a prepaid card, and doesn’t offer the same protections and rewards offered by credit cards.
