Hyatt Platinum status is surprisingly easy to earn, but what will the benefits of having the status really get you?

Don’t expect a lot, as it’s the baby of the two elite tiers with Hyatt, where top tier Diamond is the real draw. We’ll go over what you can expect when you have Hyatt Platinum status as well as the various ways you can earn it.

How to Earn Hyatt Platinum Status

It’s possible to earn Platinum status with Hyatt a few different ways:

  • 5 eligible stays at Hyatt properties within the calendar year (top-tier Diamond status requires 20 stays)
  • 15 eligible nights at Hyatt properties within the calendar year (top-tier Diamond status requires 50 nights)
  • Holding The Hyatt Credit Card issued by Chase

Getting The Hyatt Credit Card is definitely the easiest way to earn Platinum status with Hyatt, especially since Hyatt no longer matches status from other hotel programs like Hilton or Marriott.

The card does come with an annual fee of $75, waived the first year, but a benefit of The Hyatt Credit Card is a free night certificate for a Category 1-4 Hyatt hotel every year upon paying the annual fee (therefore not the first year). Because Hyatt hotels generally cost more than $75 per night, the free night certificate can make the annual fee ofThe Hyatt Credit Card at least a wash if you are diligent about using it – though you can redeem it at some very nice properties.

Hyatt Platinum Benefits

  • Preferred room upon arrival: Depending on availability, you may be upgraded to a larger room or a room on a higher floor. Upgrades do not include suites, Regency Club, or Grand Club rooms. This benefit is also not available at Hyatt Place properties, Hyatt House properties, and Hyatt Residence Club resorts.
  • Point bonus: Earn a 15% bonus on your points during your stay which works out to 5.75 (5 * 1.15) points per eligible dollar spent.
  • 72-hour room guarantee: If you need a room at a hotel and know at least 72 hours ahead of time, you are guaranteed availability. This does not apply to Hyatt Resorts, Ziva and Zilara properties, Hyatt Residence Clubs, or during times with extraordinary demand (think Times Square on New Years).
  • Check-in and check-out benefits: When checking in, you’ll have access to a dedicated elite check-in line so you can check in faster, and you can extend your check-out time to 2 pm. Again, these benefits are not available at Hyatt Residence Club resorts. Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, Ziva, and Zilara properties do not have a dedicated check-in line for Platinum members.
  • Premium wifi: Not all properties have premium wifi, but if they do you will have free access. If not, you will still have complimentary access to standard wifi.
  • Exclusive booking phone number: In case you ever need to book by phone, you’ll have access to an exclusive phone number so you won’t have to wait on the phone as long.
  • M-Life Gold status: Hyatt Platinum status can be matched to M-Life Gold status, which is the mid tier elite level for MGM Resorts and Hotels (they run hotels like The Bellagio and Mandalay Bay). That gets you a priority hotel check-in line, VIP line access to nightclubs and pool day clubs for you and a guest, along with free valet parking. You also get access to member room rate discounts and a line pass for the buffets in Las Vegas.

What is Hyatt Platinum Status Worth?

The benefits of Hyatt Platinum status aren’t much to write home about.

You might get some really minor upgrades to higher floors or slightly larger rooms with better views, but the upgrades probably won’t be noticeable a a Platinum. Club floors and suites are generally off limits for Platinum upgrades, though you might get lucky.

Some enterprising properties will have the manager greet Platinum guests on arrival, or offer other welcome amenities, but that’s the rare exception, and not the rule.

Typically the 72-hour room guarantee is not useful because the rates tend to be very high and you’ll probably book elsewhere unless the whole city is sold out. Most bookings can be made online, so you shouldn’t have to call Hyatt often, if ever.

If you stay on paid rates at Hyatt properties, the 15% bonus can be nice, but assuming you only have a few stays per year probably won’t add up to too much, nonetheless, better than nothing.

The most valuable benefit of Hyatt Platinum status for most people will be the 2 pm late check-out. Most hotels have checkout times around 11 am or noon, so this will buy you a few extra hours during your stays and let you sleep in.

And if you hit up Vegas frequently, skipping the long check-in lines thanks to M-Life Gold status is a plus, and while room upgrades aren’t a formal benefit, you’ll often get one as an M Life Gold member – though think higher floors, not big suites.

Should You Go for Hyatt Platinum Status?

It’s probably not worth it to spend extra to qualify for Platinum status on stays or on nights — the benefits just aren’t there. You could probably get some of the same benefits by asking the front desk nicely.

However, by getting Platinum status though The Hyatt Credit Card, you can have access to all of the same benefits without having to complete the stays to get there.

But we wouldn’t recommend The Hyatt Credit Card just for the status unless you spend a lot of time in Vegas and want the M-Life Gold perks. Get it instead if you can make use of the Category 1-4 Free Night Certificate every year upon paying the annual fee of $75, or spend enough at Hyatts that the 3x points on Hyatt spending becomes really valuable.
