Have some points and want to use them to book a hotel night for a friend or family member?

It’s hit or miss whether various programs allow this. When they don’t, it is sometimes possible to transfer points instead either for free or for a fee depending on the program.

This post covers the booking and transfer policies for each major hotel program.

Hotel Programs

Accor Hotels Le Club

It is not possible to directly redeem your Accor Hotels Le Club points for another person, but you can redeem points for hotel vouchers that are transferrable. It costs 2,000 points for a €40 voucher.

It is not possible to transfer points directly to another member’s account.

Best Western Rewards®

Terms and conditions do not specify that you can or can’t book a reward for someone else, but you cannot modify the name in the reservation when you book a room nor add an additional guest to your stay. For that reason, it’s not easy to book a hotel room for someone else using Best Western Rewards points.

However, transferring points is allowed between people as long as they share the same physical address. You need to contact Best Western customer service in order to initiate the points transfer.

Choice Privileges

It is possible to book awards over the phone for immediate family members only (spouse, partner, children, parents, in-laws, brothers and sisters) on 888 770 6800.When booking a reward stay for someone other than yourself, be sure to ask the reservation agent to include the name of the guest in the notes field of the reservation. Choice points cannot be transferred.

Club Carlson

You can book awards for other people directly online.

You may also transfer points to other people in your household, or to anyone if you are an elite member, as long as your account has been open for more than a year.

Hilton Honors

Per Hilton Honors terms and conditions, you can redeem an award for someone else; there is however no way to do this online and you will have to call in on 800 445 8667.

Hilton recently introduced points pooling – you can pool for free with up to 10 people and they can each share up to 500,000 points per year (and receive up to 2 million points!). If you regularly share points with specific people, this is an easier way to go than calling in every reservation you want to make.

IHG® Rewards

You can call in to IHG® to redeem your points for someone else on 888 211 9874. Note that, like for other chains, the Chase free night from the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card is not transferable.

You can also transfer IHG® points, with no limit, to another member for $5 per 1,000 points.

Marriott Rewards

You can book rooms for others with your points, but only over the phone on 801 468 4000.

You can also freely transfer up to 50,000 points per year to your spouse or significant other – or even exceed that amount, once per year, if it is for an immediate redemption. If you’d like to share points for an immediate redemption, the person you are transferring to will need to make a hotel reservation that they don’t have enough points for, you will then need to call in and tell Marriott that you would like to apply your points to a reservation being made by someone else.

Starwood Preferred Guest®

Just like with Marriott, you can book rooms for others with your points but only over the phone on 888 625 4988.

You can also transfer your points for free to a member of your household; for this, you must have had the same address registered in your profile for more than 30 days.

You can easily book an award for someone else, either online or over the phone. If you book online, simply enter their information instead of yours. Better yet, if you are a Globalist member, the Guest of Honor perk allows you to transfer all your Globalist benefits (like late check-out and free breakfast) to the person you’re redeeming for. Note that the Chase anniversary free night from The Hyatt Credit Card* is not transferable.

You can also fill in a points combining request form and email it to Hyatt to transfer points from one member to another (at no charge) but you are limited to one sharing transaction per 30-day period on a given account.

Wyndham Rewards

According to Wyndham’s terms and conditions, redeeming points for another person is allowed and should be possible online or by phone. Wyndham does not, however, allow the transferring of points between accounts

Using your hotel points for other people is definitely a good option to have. Unfortunately, not all hotel programs allow redemptions to be made in the name of another person. Fortunately, some programs do, and some programs allow the transfer of points for no fee. Some programs do charge a fee to transfer points, and this is rarely a good deal.

Each program has different rules, so you’ll have to look into the rules for the specific program you are interested in. Most programs usually offer at least one way to share your points with another person, but it’s not always free. As a general rule, using your airline miles for another person is more straightforward than sharing your hotel points.
