If you frequently travel on Delta Airlines, you should consider a credit card that lets you earn rewards to use toward free Delta flights, like the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card. Both cards offer rewards on every purchase and bonus miles on Delta purchases. Where they differ the most is their annual fees, sign-up bonuses and travel benefits.

In this article:

When deciding which of these cards is best for you, it comes down to the following:

  • Consider the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card if you fly on Delta Airlines from time to time and want to take advantage of standard airline credit card perks like a free checked bag, while paying a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $99.
  • Consider the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card if you want a larger welcome offer, more premium Delta perks, such as an annual companion pass, and you don’t mind paying a $250 annual fee.

See how the cards compare side by side in the table below.

Which card is right for you?

Ultimately, the best card for you comes down to which benefits you want to take advantage of and how much of an annual fee you want to pay.

The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card is hands down the best option if you want to earn a large influx of miles and MQMs in a short period of time or if you plan to take advantage of the annual companion certificate and other travel perks. Keep in mind, though, that these benefits come with an annual fee of $250.

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card, on the other hand, is the better choice if you travel on Delta a few times a year and usually check your bag. Plus, the card comes with a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $99.

Or, if you prefer to earn Delta SkyMiles without ever paying an annual fee, the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card is a good alternative.
