Where the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card stands out

Welcome bonus. The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card offers Earn 35,000 bonus miles after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months.

Rewards. In addition to Delta purchases, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card now offers an elevated rewards rate at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets. Earn 2X Miles on Delta purchases, at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets and 1X Mile on all other eligible purchases.

You can use your miles to book travel to more than 1,000 destinations. And while the redemption cost of a ticket will depend on a variety of factors, as a starting point, you can find round-trip tickets within the U.S. for as little as 25,000 miles.

Along with flying on Delta, you can also book award travel on these partners:

  • Aeromexico
  • Aerolineas Argentinas
  • Air Europa
  • Air France
  • Air Tahiti Nui
  • Alitalia
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern
  • China Southern
  • Czech Airlines
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • GOL
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Kenya Airways
  • KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
  • Korean Air
  • Mandarin Airlines
  • Middle East Airlines
  • Saudia Airlines
  • Shanghai Airlines
  • Tarom Airlines
  • Vietnam Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic
  • Virgin Australia
  • WestJet
  • Xiamen Airlines

Additional benefits*

$100 flight credit. As of Jan. 30, you can earn a $100 credit for future travel after spending $10,000 on eligible purchases in a calendar year.

Where the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card falls short

Annual fee. The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card comes with a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $99. That’s not too bad for an airline card with a lot to offer — but if you don’t want to pay an annual fee, you might consider a card such as the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card.

No longer offers Delta Sky Club access. Previously, this card offered discounted access to the Delta Sky Club for you and up to two traveling companions. However, that perk is no longer available.

Cannot earn the MQD waiver. If you care about earning Medallion Status with Delta, you won’t like that the card’s revamp has done away with the Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQD) waiver.

Compare it with the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card

If you want to earn Delta miles but don’t want to pay an annual fee, the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card might be a good alternative.

As mentioned earlier, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card has added restaurants and U.S. supermarkets as rewards categories — which gives you one more opportunity to earn miles than the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card. However, if you don’t fly enough to merit paying an annual fee, the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card is a fine choice.

The bottom line

If you travel frequently with Delta and are looking at the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card as a way to earn miles, this is a strong choice. The addition of restaurants and U.S. supermarkets as rewards categories adds significant value to this card.
