More Info

Are you eligible for the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card welcome offer?

Before you apply, know that if you’ve ever received a welcome offer on the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card before, you won’t get it again. Amex has a once-per-lifetime policy on its welcome offers, which means that each customer can only ever receive one offer on each card once. So even if you canceled the card a long time ago, if you earned a welcome offer on it when you had it, you won’t be able to qualify for this one.

If you’re a new cardholder, you’ll need to meet the spending requirement, which shouldn’t be too difficult if you put the bulk of your spending on this card.

Note that if American Express determines you have tried to game or abuse the system to get the welcome offer — for instance, if you cancel or downgrade your card within 12 months of opening the account — the issuer can decide not to give you the bonus miles, to freeze bonus miles already credited to your account or to remove bonus miles from your account.

How can you use your welcome offer?

You can redeem your miles for flights on Delta (starting as low as 25,000 miles for a round-trip ticket within the United States) and on the following partner airlines:

  • Aeromexico
  • Aerolineas Argentinas
  • Air Europa
  • Air France
  • Air Tahiti Nui
  • Alitalia
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern
  • China Southern
  • Czech Airlines
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • GOL
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Kenya Airways
  • KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
  • Korean Air
  • Mandarin Airlines
  • Middle East Airlines
  • Saudia Airlines
  • Shanghai Airlines
  • Tarom Airlines
  • Vietnam Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic
  • Virgin Australia
  • WestJet
  • Xiamen Airlines

When redeeming miles for award travel, you can use your miles to cover either all or part of the cost of your ticket.

Transferring rewards

You can’t transfer Delta miles to other loyalty programs, but you can transfer them to other Delta SkyMiles members. However, doing so costs $0.01 per mile transferred and a processing fee of $30 per transaction, which isn’t very cost-effective.

If you want to use your miles to help a friend or family member get a ticket, the better option is to use your miles to book a ticket for them.

Other ways to earn rewards

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card recently added restaurants and U.S. supermarkets as rewards categories: Earn 2X Miles on Delta purchases, at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets and 1X Mile on all other eligible purchases.

The bottom line

If you fly Delta frequently, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card is a good airline card to keep in your wallet. The annual fee is reasonable — $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $99.

The welcome offer is solid: earn Earn 35,000 bonus miles after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. And the ongoing rewards rate adds a strong value as well.
