Fiji is one of those bucket list destinations for honeymoons and more, but a challenging place to get to with miles if you don’t know where to look.

Before we take a deep dive into different mileage programs, let’s first look at what airlines fly to Fiji so we know where some options may be waiting for us.

The airlines that fly to Fiji are:

  • Fiji Airways
  • Jetstar
  • Air New Zealand
  • Korean Air
  • Pacific Blue
  • Virgin Australia
  • Air Niugini
  • Air Vanuatu
  • Air Caledonie
  • Nauru Airlines

Many of these airlines are not members of alliances or partners with major carriers, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see some of the names listed in options presented below.

The only airline that offers nonstop flights from the U.S. to Fiji is Fiji Airways, with flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The best place to search for Fiji Airways award space is on Alaska Airlines’ website.

You can book Fiji Airways flights with Citi ThankYou® points (transfer to Qantas), American AAdvantage® miles, and Alaska MileagePlan miles.

And surprisingly, using Citi ThankYou® points to transfer to Qantas and fly Fiji Airways is the one of the best ways to get to Fiji for less.

Best bets with Chase, Amex, or Citi points

Citi ThankYou® Points

Citi ThankYou® points offer one of the cheapest ways to book the nonstop Fiji Airways flights departing Los Angeles and San Francisco.

A transfer to Qantas lets you book the flights for just 72,000 miles roundtrip in Economy and 144,000 points in Business Class with no fuel surcharges.

Book with… Fly On… Economy Price (Round Trip) Business Class Price (Round Trip) Transfer Ratio Transfer Time
Qantas (LAX – NAN) Fiji Airways 72,000 144,000 1:1 2 Days
Asia Miles (LAX – AKL – NAN) Air New Zealand 90,000 145,000+ 1:1 1 Day
Singapore KrisFlyer Air New Zealand 110,000 195,000 1:1 2 Days
Air France/KLM Flying Blue Korean 110,000 250,000 1:1 2 Days
Virgin Atlantic Air New Zealand 60,000 90,000 1:1 2 Days

You can book Fiji Airways flights online using the Qantas website, and transfers from Citi to Qantas take about 2 days.

While award space isn’t wide open, it’s not impossible to score if you are flexible, even for Business Class seats. Here’s the price for a one way in Business Class using Qantas miles transferred from Citi.

This is one of the best values for ThankYou® points around, with 144,000 points roundtrip in Business Class getting you almost $3,500 in airfare savings.

If you want to connect to the Fiji flights departing San Francisco or Los Angeles, you can fly American or Alaska Airlines, and pay extra points, since Qantas charges for awards based on the distance you fly.

Chase Ultimate Rewards®

Using Chase point transfer partners won’t get you Fiji Airways flights, but there are some connection options if you want to fly via Korea, Australia, or New Zealand.

Book with… Fly On… Economy Price (Round Trip) Business Class Price (Round Trip) Transfer Ratio Transfer Time
United MileagePlus Air New Zealand 70,000 150,000 1:1 Instant
Singapore KrisFlyer Air New Zealand 110,000 195,000 1:1 Up to 2 days
Korean SKYPASS Korean Air, Virgin Australia 110,000 185,000 1:1 Instant
Air France/KLM Flying Blue Korean Air 110,000 250,000 1:1 Instant
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Air New Zealand 60,000 90,000 1:1 Instant

United MileagePlus and Singapore KrisFlyer can be used to book flights on Star Alliance member Air New Zealand, which is a long way to fly unless you work in a stopover in New Zealand.

Virgin Atlantic miles can also theoretically be used to book Air New Zealand flights.

Korean Skypass and Air France/KLM Flying Blue miles can be used to book flights on Korean Air, which has pretty decent award availability in Business Class if you’re wiling to spend over 24 hours flying via Seoul.

laxnankorean

If you’re looking at booking a Korean Airlines flight, both Korean Skypass and Air France Flying Blue charge the same number of miles for Economy, but you’ll save by booking with Korean if you want to fly in Business – just 185,000 miles using Korean Skypass vs 250,000 points via Air France Flying Blue.

Keep in mind, Korean has a policy that you are only allowed to redeem miles for immediate family members, and you will be required to prove your relation to someone you are booking for (i.e. marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.).

Beware Air France has a strict fraud prevention team that frowns on bookings made by new accounts.

It’s best to call to make a booking with Air France miles instead of booking online, and to make that call before you do any transfer of your points to Air France.

While it appears that Virgin Atlantic offers the best prices, this booking option is purely theoretical at this point. There are many reports of IT issues causing problems and no reports of successful bookings. Don’t hold your breath on this one.

American Express Membership Rewards®

American Express Membership Rewards® also present quite a few options for booking flights to Fiji, but none of them on Fiji Airways itself.

Book with… Fly On… Economy Price (Round Trip) Business Class Price (Round Trip) Transfer Ratio Transfer Time
ANA Air New Zealand 75,000 120,000 1:1 2-3 Days
Asia Miles (LAX – AKL – NAN) Air New Zealand 90,000 145,000+ 1:1 ~1 Day
Air Canada Aeroplan Air New Zealand 90,000 160,000 1:1 Instant
Singapore KrisFlyer Air New Zealand 110,000 195,000 1:1 12-24 Hours
Air France/KLM Flying Blue Korean 110,000 250,000 1:1 Instant
Delta SkyMiles Korean, Virgin Australia 140,000 250,000 1:1 Instant
Virgin Atlantic Air New Zealand 60,000 90,000 1:1 1-2 Days

ANA offers the cheapest Business Class price at 120,000 miles roundtrip for Air New Zealand flights if you can find the award space. Air Canada Aeroplan, Singapore Krisflyer, and theoretically Virgin Atlantic Flying Club are transfer partners you can use to book flights on Air New Zealand.

Asia Miles is not part of Star Alliance, but is also a partner with Air New Zealand, so you can use Asia Miles to book Air New Zealand flights provided you can find award space.

Asia Miles charges award prices differently based on the distance of the flight. The award prices listed above are based on a sample round trip from Los Angeles to Nadi International Airport. If you want to find out more about how Asia Miles pricing and redemptions work, please check out our cheat sheet.

Both Delta SkyMiles and Air France/KLM Flying Blue can be used to book flights on Korean Air.

American AAdvantage Miles

American AAdvantage miles can also be used to book flights on Fiji Airways, and like Alaska, AA is only a transfer partner of SPG.

American charges the same number of miles as Alaska to fly in economy, but charges quite a few more for the same flights in business class.

Book With… Fly On… Economy Price (Round Trip) Business Price (Round Trip)
American AAdvantage Fiji Airways 80,000 160,000

Alaska MileagePlan

Likely an even better way to book Fiji Airways flights is with Alaska Airlines miles. The tough thing about Alaska miles is they are hard to get your hands on, with only one credit card to earn a bonus with and no major credit card transfer partner. You can transfer SPG points to Alaska at a 1:1 ratio and get a 5,000 mile bonus when you transfer in increments of 20,000 points.

Book With… Fly On… Economy Price (Round Trip) Business Price (Round Trip)
Alaska Airlines Fiji Chart Fiji Airways 80,000 110,000
Alaska Airlines Korean Chart Korean 85,000 125,000

If you have Alaska miles, you also have the benefit of being able to book flights on Korean Air, albeit for a few more miles than booking flights on Fiji Airways.

A great benefit of Alaska Airlines miles is that they allow a stopover on a one-way ticket. This means if you book a round trip ticket, you can stopover somewhere on both the outbound and the inbound flight.

The downside, however, is that partners cannot be combined on a one-way booking, so your trip has to be entirely on one airline plus an Alaska Airlines connection if you want one.

For round trips, you can make a booking with one partner in one direction and another partner on the return flight.
