Who the card is best for

Cashback rewards seekers and travelers — The rewards offered by this card benefit consumers who travel abroad as well as frequent diners with 3% on travel/entertainment, 2% on restaurants & 1% on all other purchases. Plus, you can travel outside the U.S. without worrying about pesky foreign transaction fees. If you aren’t a traveler or foodie, check out other rewards and no annual fee cards that provide other rewards programs that may be better suited to your spending habits.

Rewards breakdown

The rewards program is ideal for frequent travelers and those who often dine out — you can earn 3% on travel/entertainment, 2% on restaurants & 1% on all other purchases. Cash back is automatically redeemed for a statement credit in increments of $25. And, while your card is open, cash back doesn’t expire.

Where this card stands out in its category

$0 annual fee plus a robust rewards program. You can earn a rewards rate that is hard to come by for no-fee cards — 3% on travel/entertainment, 2% on restaurants & 1% on all other purchases. This rate is great considering many of the top travel cards require an annual fee.

Simple cashback redemption. Your cash back is automatically redeemed as a statement credit when it hits $25. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about when you can redeem cash back or what to redeem it for — it will simply be applied to your balance. Note, the redeemed cash back doesn’t count toward your minimum payment.

Where this card falls short in its category

No balance transfers allowed. This card is one of few that don’t allow you to transfer a balance. However, if you’re looking for a card to complete a balance transfer, there are plenty of balance transfer cards for you to choose from that may offer intro $0 balance transfer fees and 0% intro periods up to 21 months.

Additional card benefits

The Deserve® Pro Mastercard has several added perks:

  • Cellphone protection*: You may be reimbursed up to $600 for theft or damage of your cellphone when you pay you monthly cellphone bill with your card.
  • Car rental collision damage waiver*: If your eligible car rental is damaged or stolen, you may be covered with Master Rental®.
  • Travel assistance services*: Traveling over 50 miles from home allows you to qualify for legal referrals, medical assistance and more.
  • Roadside assistance*: Stuck on the side of the road? Simply call 1-800-Mastercard for towing services. Note, you’re responsible for the cost of services.

*You must use your card to qualify for these services. Terms apply.

How to use it most effectively

Take this card when you travel abroad. There is no foreign transaction fee for this card, so it’s helpful to use it on purchases made outside the U.S. This saves you the typical 3% fee other cards may charge. Also, if you book your travel with this card, you can benefit from the higher cashback rate — 3% on travel/entertainment, 2% on restaurants & 1% on all other purchases.

Pay on time and in full. Payment history is the most important factor of your credit score, comprising 35%. Therefore, it’s key to pay each statement on time and in full. In addition to helping your credit score, having a good payment history allows you to avoid late payment fees, penalty APRs and interest charges.

Compare it with the Deserve® Classic Mastercard

If you’re someone with fair/good credit or no credit, you may have a better chance qualifying for the Deserve® Classic Mastercard.

The Deserve® Classic Mastercard is a no-frills card that doesn’t offer rewards, but it does have a more accepting credit requirement — fair/good credit or no credit. That’s compared with the Deserve® Pro Mastercard requiring excellent/good credit or no credit. So, if you have less than perfect credit, you may have better qualification odds with the Deserve® Classic Mastercard.

However, looking at the annual fees and rewards, the Deserve® Pro Mastercard has a better offering with a $0 annual fee and a cashback program where you can earn 3% on travel/entertainment, 2% on restaurants & 1% on all other purchases. In comparison, the Deserve® Classic Mastercard has a $0 annual fee and no rewards program. Plus, the Deserve® Pro Mastercard offers credit limits up to $10,000, while the Deserve® Classic Mastercard only has limits up to $1,500 depending on your creditworthiness.

Here’s a breakdown of the key features of each card:

Deserve® Pro Mastercard Deserve® Classic Mastercard
Annual Fee $0 $0
Regular Purchase APR 17.49% - 24.49% Variable 24.49% Variable
Rewards 3% on travel/entertainment, 2% on restaurants & 1% on all other purchases None
Foreign Transaction Fee None None

Bottom line

If you want to benefit from a well-rounded cashback card that has a $0 annual fee, the Deserve® Pro Mastercard is a great choice that also offers other perks that can save you money such as cellphone protection* (up to $600) and no foreign transaction fees.
