Plane tickets can be pricey – especially if you’re purchasing an additional ticket for a spouse, friend or family member on the same flight. Instead of paying twice the airfare each time you fly with a companion, you may want to consider an airline credit card that offers a companion pass.

A companion pass allows a companion to fly with you for little-to-no cost or at a deeply discounted rate. In many cases, you will only be responsible for paying the taxes and fees.

Read on to see which airline credit cards currently offer companion passes or companion discounts.

Southwest Companion Pass

Southwest Airlines boasts one of the most well-known and sought after companion passes available, due to the high value it offers. With the Southwest Companion Pass, you can choose one designated person to fly for free with you each time you purchase or redeem points for a flight. Your designated companion selection can be switched out up to three times a year.

Your Companion Pass will be valid for the remainder of the year in which you earned it, through the end of the following year. For example, if you earn the Southwest Companion Pass on Sept. 1, 2020, it will be valid from that date through Dec. 31, 2021.

To receive the Southwest Companion Pass, you must earn 125,000 qualifying points or take 100 qualifying one-way flights booked through Southwest within a calendar year. Qualifying points include Rapid Rewards points earned from making purchases using your Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card, as well as points earned from flights booked through Southwest and base points earned from Rapid Rewards partners.

Are there any fees?

Yes. You will be responsible for paying the taxes and fees – which start at $5.60 for a one-way flight.

Should you apply for a credit card with a companion pass?

Companion passes and companion discounts offer a great opportunity to save money and miles when flying with a family member, partner or friend. But before deciding which companion pass is right for you, be sure to consider how easy the pass is to obtain and how high the card’s annual fee is.

For example, the value you can get from the Southwest Companion Pass easily covers the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card’s $69 annual fee. However, racking up the 125,000 points required to earn the pass within a calendar year may be a difficult feat.

By contrast, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card automatically issues a companion certificate each year on your account anniversary. But the card also charges an annual fee of $550.
