You got a great deal on a credit card. And you know someone who is shopping for one. The good news is there are credit card companies that actually want to pay you to refer your eligible friends and family. Referral deals are a win-win for both sides. You get paid for helping someone find a card that works for them and the company gets a new, loyal customer.
Check out these credit card issuers that offer referral bonuses and what it takes to earn them.

American Express offers Membership Rewards points referral bonuses for its cards. Cardmembers log in, refer a friend or family using either a personalized link or via email or Facebook, then earn a referral bonus based on card type and eligibility if the friend or family member is approved.
Card Members can learn more about the referral bonuses available to them by visiting americanexpress.com/refer and entering their American Express online login details. You can also login to the Amex mobile app and access the Refer a Friend options under the Membership Tab. Note that points bonuses are subject to change.
Below are the rules for American Express’s eligible cards:
- The Platinum Card® from American Express: earn a bonus of 15,000 membership rewards points for each approved referral.*
- American Express® Gold Card: earn a bonus of 10,000 Membership Rewards points.*
- The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express☨: earn a bonus of 10,000 Membership Rewards points.*

Chase has nine cards that are eligible for Refer-A-Friend bonuses. After a cardholder enters their name, zip code, and last four digits of their card, they will be directed to a page with details on the specific Refer-A-Friend offer. On that page, enter the first name and email address for friends you wish to invite and click submit. You can also click on the Facebook and Twitter icons and post an invitation link on your accounts.
Chase allows you to invite as many friends as you want during the referral period and you will receive your rewards for each friend who is approved by the offer deadline. Each card has a maximum rewards cap for its Refer-A-Friend offers per calendar year. That cap is shown on the offer page after inputting your name, zip code, and last four digits of your card. Referrers can send up to 25 email invitations in any 24-hour period.
The maximum Refer-A-Friend rewards you can earn from all offers is 50,000 bonus points per calendar year.
Below are the rules for the company’s eligible cards:
- Chase Freedom Unlimited® and Chase Freedom® credit cards: receive $100 cash back for each friend who gets the card, earning up to $500 cash back per year.
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve® credit cards: receive 10,000 bonus points for each friend who gets these card, up to 50,000 points a year.
- Marriott Rewards Premier® Credit Card☨: receive 20,000 bonus points for each friend who gets the card, earning up to 100,000 points a year.
- Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus☨ and Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier☨ Credit Cards: receive 10,000 bonus points for each friend who gets these cards, earning up to 50,000 points a year.
- Hyatt Credit Card☨: receive 10,000 bonus points for each friend who gets the card, earning up to 50,000 points a year.
- Disney® Visa® Card.☨: get 100 Disney Rewards Dollars for each friend who gets the card, earning up to 500 Disney Rewards Dollars a year.
Cardholders who refer a friend using a special link will receive a $50 statement credit referral reward. The friend must apply for the specific offer you send via a link provided and must be approved by December 31, 2018. You can do up to 10 referral rewards ($500) per calendar year.
Not only do you get a $50 credit, each eligible friend will also receive a $50 statement credit once they’ve made a purchase within three months of opening a new card account. Your account must be in good standing to receive a referral reward.
The referral bonus* cannot be used for Discover® Business card, Discover® Business Miles card, Essential by Discover®card, Escape by Discover® card or Miles by Discover® card. Existing Discover cardmembers and those who have opted out of receiving market communications from Discover are not eligible referrals.
Companies that don’t offer referral bonuses on credit cards
Unfortunately, not all credit card companies offer referral bonuses. These major issuers do not, at this time, offer referral bonuses:
- Bank of America
- Wells Fargo
