If you don’t use a credit card for small purchases, now may be the time to start. Citi released a new credit card, the Citi Rewards+℠ Card, on Jan. 10 that provides a unique feature — all purchases round up to the nearest 10 points. That means if you purchase a $2 coffee, you earn 10 points, and if you spend $12 on lunch, you earn 20 points.

There currently is no other rewards card that provides this rounding bonus, making the Citi Rewards+℠ Card an interesting offer. We’ll review where the Citi Rewards+℠ Card stands out and falls short, and how it compares to another popular Citi card, the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer.

What we like about the Citi Rewards+℠ Card

  • 0% for 15 months

  • Earn 15,000 bonus points after you spend $1,000 in purchases with your card within 3 months of account opening; redeemable for $100 in gift cards at thankyou.com

  • 15.24% - 25.24% (Variable)

Highlights
  • The Citi Rewards+℠ Card - the only credit card that automatically rounds up to the nearest 10 points on every purchase - with no cap.
  • Earn 15,000 bonus points after you spend $1,000 in purchases with your card within 3 months of account opening; redeemable for $150 in gift cards at thankyou.com
  • 0% Intro APR on balance transfers and purchases for 15 months. After that, the variable APR will be 15.24% - 25.24%, based on your creditworthiness.
  • Earn 2X ThankYou® Points at Supermarkets and Gas Stations for the first $6,000 per year and then 1X Points thereafter. Plus, earn 1X Points on All Other Purchases.
  • The standard variable APR for Citi Flex Plan is 15.24% - 25.24% based on your creditworthiness. Citi Flex Plan offers are made available at Citi's discretion.

$0 annual fee. There hasn’t been a $0 annual fee ThankYou rewards card since the Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card* stopped taking new applications last year. Thankfully, there’s now the Citi Rewards+℠ Card, which allows cardholders to earn ThankYou rewards without paying an annual fee.

Purchases round up to the nearest 10 points. No matter how small your purchase is, it’ll be rounded up to the nearest 10 ThankYou® Points. It’s rare to find a card that rewards you for small spending, but the Citi Rewards+℠ Card does just that, encouraging you to charge small transactions on the card.

10% points back from redemptions. For the first 100,000 ThankYou Points redeemed per year, you receive 10% back. For example, if you redeemed 100,000 ThankYou Points for gift cards, you’d receive $1,000 in gift cards and 10% of those ThankYou Points back, or 10,000 ThankYou Points, which would allow you an additional $100 in gift cards.

What we don’t like about the Citi Rewards+℠ Card

Higher gas and supermarket rewards are capped. You only earn 2 ThankYou Points for every $1 spent at supermarkets and gas stations for the first $6,000 per year, before the rewards rate drops to 1 ThankYou Point per dollar spent. If you spend more than $500 a month combined in both categories, this can be a setback.

Low everyday rewards rate. Purchases made outside of supermarkets and gas stations earn a subpar 1 ThankYou Point per dollar spent. The roundup feature helps offset the low rewards rate, but you can do better with alternative cards, such as the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer (earn 2% cash back on purchases: 1% when you buy plus 1% as you pay.).

Rewards breakdown

Cardholders earn 2X ThankYou® Points at Supermarkets and Gas Stations for the first $6,000 per year and then 1X Points thereafter. Plus, earn 1X Points on All Other Purchases. In addition, there’s a sign-up bonus — earn Earn 15,000 bonus points after you spend $1,000 in purchases with your card within 3 months of account opening; redeemable for $100 in gift cards at thankyou.com. The bonus can also be redeemed in other ways:

Compare it to the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer

More Info

The Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer sets the standard for flat-rate cashback cards — Earn 2% cash back on purchases: 1% when you buy plus 1% as you pay. This is a better rewards rate on all your spending compared to the Citi Rewards+℠ Card, but, you can see increased rewards earning potential when using both cards side-by-side.

For example, purchases above $5 could be made with the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer while spending less than $5 should be charged to the Citi Rewards+℠ Card. The exceptions are purchases made at supermarkets and gas stations. The first $6,000 spent a year in these categories should be on the Citi Rewards+℠ Card, and after hitting the annual maximum, spending above $5 should be on the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer and less than $5 on the Citi Rewards+℠ Card. This allows small purchases to benefit from the Citi Rewards+℠ Card’s rounding up to the nearest 10 points, and more sizeable purchases to benefit from the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer’s 2% rewards.

Looking beyond rewards, the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer provides a longer balance transfer period with an intro 0% for 18 months on balance transfers (after, 15.74%– 25.74% (Variable) APR). However, it has no 0% intro period for purchases, so if you want to finance a large purchase over several months, consider the Citi Rewards+℠ Card’s intro 15.24% - 25.24% (Variable) on purchases (after, 15.24% - 25.24% (Variable) APR).

Here’s a breakdown of the key features of both cards:

Citi Rewards+℠ Card Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer
Annual fee $0 $0
Regular purchase APR 15.24% - 25.24% (Variable) 15.74%– 25.74% (Variable)
Intro purchase APR 0% for 15 months N/A
Intro balance transfer APR 0% for 15 months 0% for 18 months on Balance Transfers
Balance transfer fee 3% of cash balance transfer; $5 minimum 3% of each balance transfer; $5 minimum.
Rewards 2X ThankYou® Points at Supermarkets and Gas Stations for the first $6,000 per year and then 1X Points thereafter. Plus, earn 1X Points on All Other Purchases

Plus, all purchases round up to the nearest 10 points.

Earn 2% cash back on purchases: 1% when you buy plus 1% as you pay.

Bottom line

If you’re looking to maximize rewards on small purchases, the Citi Rewards+℠ Card is a great card to consider. This card is unmatched when it comes to earning rewards on less expensive everyday purchases. Plus, receiving 10% back on up to 100,000 ThankYou Points per year is a great way to get added value from your ThankYou Points.
