However, make sure you’re aware of the Chase 5/24 rule before applying. This is an unwritten rule which, boiled down, says that you may not be approved for any Chase credit card if you’ve been approved for five or more credit cards from any issuer in the past 24 months.

The Chase Freedom® also comes with the following benefits:

  • Zero liability protection
  • Purchase protection
  • Extended warranty protection
  • Fraud protection
  • Fraud alerts

Discover it® Cash Back

The Discover it® Cash Back comes with the following benefits:

  • Use the website or mobile app to freeze your card and to prevent new purchases, cash advances and balance transfers if the card is lost or stolen.
  • Free FICO® credit score
  • Customer service is 100% U.S.-based
  • No late fee for the first missed payment
  • $0 fraud liability

APRs and fees

Both cards offer generous rewards. But how do they stack up when it comes to annual percentage rates (APRs) and fees? Here’s the breakdown:

APRs

The Chase Freedom® offers 0% Intro APR on Purchases for 15 months and 0% Intro APR on Balance Transfers for 15 months. After that, the APRs are 14.99% to 23.74% variable for purchases and 14.99% to 23.74% variable for balance transfers.

The Discover it® Cash Back intro APR offer is 0% for 14 months on purchases and 0% for 14 months on balance transfers. Afterward, the APR increases to 11.99% - 22.99% variable for purchases and 11.99% - 22.99% variable for balance transfers.

Fees

With a $0 annual fee for the Chase Freedom® and a $0 annual fee for the Discover it® Cash Back, both cards are head-to-head. When it comes to foreign transaction fees, the Chase Freedom® charges 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars and the Discover it® Cash Back charges none. However, it’s worth noting that Discover isn’t as widely accepted in some countries as Visa and Mastercard credit cards.

The Chase Freedom® charges a balance transfer fee of 3% when you transfer during the first 60 days of account opening, with a minimum of $5. The Discover it® Cash Back‘s balance transfer fee is a 3% intro balance transfer fee, up to 5% fee on future balance transfers (see terms)*.

The bottom line

Both of these cards offer excellent value, so the one you choose to apply for will likely be influenced by which credit card has the quarterly categories more compatible with your spending patterns.

If you already have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, that might sway you in favor of the Chase Freedom® to maximize your Ultimate Rewards earnings. However, if you’re not a Sapphire cardholder, we lean toward the Discover it® Cash Back. You can earn an excellent value by taking advantage of the fact that (for new cardmembers) Unlimited Cashback Match – only from Discover. Discover will automatically match all the cash back you’ve earned at the end of your first year! There’s no minimum spending or maximum rewards. Just a dollar-for-dollar match.

Whichever 5% cashback card you apply for, it’s worth pairing with a flat-rate rewards card so you can earn a higher rate than 1% back on purchases outside the 5% quarterly categories. One good option for earning flat-rate cash back is the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer. You can earn 2% cash back on purchases: 1% when you buy plus 1% as you pay.

Another good option is the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card. You can earn 1.5% cash back on every purchase, every day when using this card.

If you’re not sure either of these two fits your needs, take a look at our list of best flat-rate cashback and rewards cards to see which one might be the best choice for you!
