If Belk is your department store of choice, you might have considered applying for a Belk credit card. There are two — the Belk Rewards Mastercard®, which can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted, and the Belk Rewards Card, a store card that can only be used at Belk. We’ll help you evaluate if one of these cards might be a good fit for your shopping needs.

Belk Credit Cards pros

Belk Rewards Mastercard® pros

Rewards. Earn 3 points per $1 spent at Belk and Belk.com. Plus, earn 2 points per $1 spent on grocery and fuel purchases, and 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases.

You also have the chance to get a boosted earning rate by achieving premier status or elite status. For premier status, you’ll need to spend at least $600 per year at Belk. For elite status, the number to hit is $1,500 per year. Note that returns, sales tax, interest charges and fees don’t count toward your spend amount for earning these boosted statuses.

Premier status boosts your rewards rate on Belk and Belk.com purchases to 4 points per $1 spent, and elite status boosts it to 5 points per $1 spent.

Sign-up bonus. Earn $10 in Belk Rewards Dollars when you are approved and make a purchase with your new Belk Rewards credit card account.

Belk Credit Cards cons

Belk Rewards Mastercard® cons

Complicated redemption structure. For every 1,000 points you earn, you’ll get an award in the amount of $10 in Belk Reward Dollars mailed to you. You can redeem that in person at a Belk store or online by entering the barcode number printed on the rewards certificate. If your purchase is less than the value of the Belk Reward Dollars you’re redeeming, you forfeit the difference.

This is more complicated than many other cashback and rewards cards, which allow you to redeem your rewards for options such as statement credits and gift cards. Plus, if you end up forfeiting leftover Belk Reward Dollars, you’re simply losing rewards.

Belk Rewards Card cons

Complicated redemption structure. The Belk Rewards Card follows the same rewards structure as the Belk Rewards Mastercard®. For every 1,000 points earned, you’ll be mailed an award in the amount of $10 in Belk Reward Dollars.

Can only be used at Belk and Belk.com. This is a store card. It earns a good rewards rate on Belk purchases, but you can’t make purchases anywhere else.

Additional benefits of the Belk Credit Cards

Belk Rewards Mastercard® benefits

No annual fee. Since the annual fee is $0, all the rewards you earn are net money back in your pocket (assuming you don’t carry a balance and incur interest charges).

Belk Rewards Card benefits

No annual fee. This card’s annual fee is also $0, so you don’t have to pay just to carry it.

Is a Belk Credit Card right for you?

If you’re an avid Belk shopper and your main goal is to maximize the rewards you earn at Belk and Belk.com, you may find value in one of the Belk credit cards. However, we think most shoppers will benefit from a general purpose credit card that earns better rewards on transactions beyond just Belk purchases, and that offers a less convoluted rewards and redemption structure. If you want a card that earns a good rate on select U.S. department store purchases, as well as strong cash back in other areas, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express could be a better fit for your wallet.
