Our partner Citi and American Airlines have rebranded and upgraded the Citi® / AAdvantage® Bronze card to the new American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card. Users of the old card were automatically transferred over on July 22, 2018, when the new card made its official debut.

The main changes from the old to the new card include a boost on the miles per $1 spent not only on American Airlines purchases, but also at grocery stores.

The American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card comes with pretty robust travel and purchase protections that you don’t always see with other cards that don’t charge an annual fee. And if you want a card that helps you earn American Airlines AAdvantage® miles with a $0 annual fee,  plus perks, the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card is a good choice.

But if you want something that offers more points per $1 spent, a more lucrative sign-up bonus and a free checked bag, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® is a good alternative, even with its $99, waived for first 12 months annual fee.

  • Earn 2 miles for each $1 spent at grocery stores & for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases

  • No annual fee & 25% savings on inflight food and beverage purchases

Where the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card falls short in its category

Sign-up bonus has limited value. The sign-up bonus miles offered by the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card are only enough to redeem for a MileSAAver award to take a one-way, 500-mile or less flight in the contiguous 48 states.

Point exceptions. You won’t earn the miles per $1 spent in the grocery category at general merchandise/discount superstores, wholesale/warehouse clubs, candy/confectionery stores, cafes, bars, lounges and fast food restaurants. You also don’t earn extra miles paying for car rentals and hotel reservations (except taxes and charges paid when redeeming miles for car/hotel) or buying elite status boosts or renewals, and AA CargoSM products and services. There are other travel-branded cards that offer more miles per $1 spent in the broader travel category, along with dining and gas.

No airline benefits. This card doesn’t come with travel-related perks like airport lounge access, a free checked bag and priority check-in and boarding.

No help with elite status. There’s no way for you to earn bonus miles that help you achieve and maintain elite status on American Airlines.
