Who the card is best for

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® is a great option for American Airlines customers who want to earn AAdvantage® miles at a faster rate compared to using a non-AAdvantage® card. Not only can you earn 2 AAdvantage® miles per dollar on eligible American Airlines purchases*, but you can also redeem those miles to fly to destinations for up to 7,500 fewer AAdvantage® miles.

Travelers who don’t fly with American Airlines won’t see much benefit with this card since it’s designed for frequent American Airline flyers. Also, if you want to earn cash back, this card isn’t for you — check out cash back cards.

Where this card stands out in its category

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® offers great perks that provide added value to the rewards program. You can save money on checked baggage, access preferred boarding and receive a 25% discount on eligible in-flight food and beverage purchases. There are also additional travel benefits such as insurances and travel and emergency assistance to provide protection.

Where this card falls short in its category

There is an annual fee for this card at $95, waived for first 12 Months*. This isn’t the highest among travel rewards cards, which can carry fees as high as $550 per year, but you can find travel cards without annual fees. Also, the rewards you earn on non-American Airlines purchases is subpar. You can find travel cards that offer a decent flat rate on all purchases, possibly earning you more rewards. However, it’s important to note that other cards might not come with the same perks like preferred boarding and in-flight discounts.

Additional card benefits

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® offers great perks for American Airlines flyers:

  • Preferred boarding: Board the plane faster when you fly with American Airlines.
  • First checked bag free: Your first checked bag is free for you and up to four companions when you travel on the same reservation with American Airlines. .
  • 25% in-flight savings: When flying with American Airlines, use your card to pay for snacks and drinks and you can receive a 25% savings on eligible in-flight food and beverage purchases. .
  • Citi Price Rewind: Register items and Citi will search for a lower price for 60 days. If a lower price is found, you may receive the difference between the price you paid and the price found. .
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection: If you have to cancel your trip for an unexpected reason, rest assured that you may be reimbursed for non-refundable trip expenses when you pay with your card. .
  • Worldwide travel accident insurance: Travel accidents that occur may be covered when the trip has been paid for with your card. .
  • Travel & emergency assistance: Receive 24/7 access to representatives that can help you book a trip, deal with emergency travel arrangements, travel issues, medical and legal referrals and more. .
  • Lost baggage protection: Don’t worry if your luggage is lost, stolen, or damaged — you may be refunded the purchase price of missing items or the cost to repair or replace the damaged items, whichever is less. .

How to use the card most effectively

To gain the most value from the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®, use it for all purchases with American Airlines since you’ll earn 2 AAdvantage® miles per dollar on eligible American Airlines purchases*. Then, when it comes time to redeem miles, you may benefit the most from redeeming for flights with the reduced mileage awards feature. This is a great way for you to fly using fewer AAdvantage® miles. Your MileSAAver® mileage discount can be up to 7,500 round-trip or 3,750 one-way, if your travel booked is greater than 500 miles in distance. Refer to your cardmember agreement and visit aa.com/reducedmileageawards for more information.

Meet the requirements of the sign-up bonus to increase your AAdvantage® miles: earn 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after making $2,500 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening*.

Rewards breakdown

Compare it with the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® and the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card are both travel rewards cards, but they provide different benefits for travelers. The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card is a more general travel card, with a flat-rate rewards program: 2 Miles per dollar on every purchase, every day. The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® has a more focused rewards program targeted towards American Airlines flyers: 2 AAdvantage® miles per dollar on eligible American Airlines purchases*. If you don’t fly with American Airlines, you most likely will benefit more from the 2 Miles per dollar on every purchase, every day.

In regards to additional card benefits, both cards offer similar features like insurances and lost baggage reimbursement, however the 2 AAdvantage® miles per dollar on eligible American Airlines purchases* pulls ahead in specialized benefits for American Airlines flyers like preferred boarding and first checked bag free. The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card does not offer these features, so if you’re an American Airline customer, the choice is clear — Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®. Otherwise, if you prefer another airline, the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card can be a better option.

Here’s a breakdown of the key elements of each card:

It is fair to say that this card is pretty good. Not too many points per dollar on anything other than AA goods and services. It is good for early boarding and the free bag in domestic flights. In addition good coverage for travel insurance.

We love flying AA and thus we really use the "perks" that come with this card. In addition, we have found that if you charge enough to make a difference Citi will refund/rebate the yearly fee! It is very nice to be able to check in your bags and not have to worry about a carry-on bag (small enough, etc.)
