You should apply for credit cards depending on your intended use. Bank of America has 3% back on gas purchases which is my favorite card. Chase, Capital One, Barclay, Wells Fargo are also great cards. A few department store cards are great for financing, coupons, and cash back. Paying your debt off every month and not missing payments really pay off in the long run. It leads to better insurance rates, interest charges, and down payments on loans and security deposits on utilities. Having a mix of visa, mastercard, American express, discover is also a great idea. I'm thinking about a citi card at this point.

I have Capital One Venture One and an American Express Centurion. I do a lot of international travel and own my own business. Capital One Venture One is my choice for small purchases. Centurion for everything else since I MUST spend over $250,000 annually.

Discover is an EXCELLENT choice. Been a member since 2007 and it is far by the best card. They offer promotions with no interest, they will lower your interest and really easy to get your credit line increase if you are paying on time as well. I put my daughter when she was 10 year old on my account building her credit and she's 19 and bought her first car 2010 with no cosigner and got her loan with our credit union for 2.49% all because I was building her credit with DISCOVER

are there credit cards for those with poor credit?

Check out some secured and unsecured credit cards for bad credit or limited credit. These will be your best options, and many of them include monthly reporting to the three main credit bureaus so that you can quickly rebuild your credit.

If you pay off one card, what happens with that card - can you cancel it without credit repercussions? If you keep it with no balance will you still have to pay its annual fee or any other fee for not using it?

If you pay off a credit card, the account will still remain open and you will likely still have to pay the annual fee when your account anniversary comes around. You can always cancel the credit card once the balance is paid off, but depending on your situation this could have a slight negative impact on your credit score, especially if the account you are closing is one of your oldest accounts. But as long as you pay your bills on time and don't carry too much debt, the impact should be minimal.

You can experience some...like a couple points drop in your credit score depending on how long the card has been opened. Two years or less no problems, but over two yes. If there's an annual fee you will have to pay it, However if you have NEVER BEEN late or missed a payment call the credit card company and say this "Hi my name is Christine and I'm a valuable customer and would like for you to waive my annual fee for my on time payment and no late fee. Then try and charge small amount and continue to pay on time. Good luck

0% Credit Cards & Interest Free Credit Cards

Low interest rate (or 0%) credit cards can save you hundreds of dollars on balance transfers and on routine purchases carried over as credit card balances. Or you may simply want to be rewarded with a preferential interest rate as acknowledgement for good credit history and responsible debt management. Whatever your goals or motivation, zero percent or low interest credit cards can help you maintain the lowest rates available to individuals with excellent to good credit. You can find out more about credit score here.

Keep in mind that there are two main categories of low rate credit cards, namely those that offer a Variable APR and those that give you a Fixed APR.  Just like with variable versus fixed rate mortgages, a fixed rate APR will remain relatively stable through the course of the loan. If your card company decides to raise it – which is somewhat rare – they will first notify you of that change according to Federal law requirements. With a variable rate, your APR is tied to a prevailing rate such as the Prime Interest Rate. If the prime rate increases then your APR will most likely follow in a similar fashion.

Generally speaking, credit card companies and banks will extend either 6 or 21 month offers – within the 0% to 3.99% annual interest rate range. That can generate a considerable discount when normal APRs are averaging around 15% or higher. Once the introductory promotional period expires, the APR on a low interest credit card or interest free credit card may revert to the regular interest rate. Of course the ideal balance is a credit card that offers a great near term rate followed by an attractive, competitively priced low interest rate for the long term.

The interest rate charged on your credit card is widely regarded as the single most important component of your card. That’s because it determines the major cost for you to borrow or roll over balances and pay them off over time instead of all at once or within the same month that you make purchases. That’s why getting a zero percent or low interest credit card can be huge financial boon, no matter what your credit card usage patterns or money management strategies may be.
