Hi, I'm looking for a balance transfer for around 12/14K to pay off all my cards... I always have my bills on auto pay. My credit score is "only" the upper "good" because of the high ratio....I want to pay everything off quickly, then have their low interest rate.... Any ideas who might take me on? Multi inquires also lower the scores! Need advice.....

Hi Betty,

A few of the best options for balance transfers are the Chase Slate and the Citi Simplicity. However, regardless of which card you apply for, there is no guarantee that you will get approved for a line of credit up to $14,000. My advice would be to apply and hope for the best. Even if you are not approved for the full amount you were looking for, transferring even a portion of your balance to one of the low interest credit cards will save you hundreds of dollars over the introductory period!

Hi Marty,

One of the best balance transfer credit cards available is the Chase Slate. This card has 0% APR for the first 15 months and it's also one of the only cards that has no balance transfer fee!

What do you do if you have no credit at all but would like to apply for a credit card I have in the past but have been turned down for not having a credit score so how do you get accepted for a small amount to start out with and who do you go to to get it who will accept me with no credit?

By: CompareCards | Jul 27, 2015

Hi Joseph,

Typically, if you're trying to build credit for the first time, you'll need to start with a secured credit card. A secured card is essentially a credit card with a security deposit. You give the bank a small amount of collateral in the form of cash and they give you a credit card, usually with a relatively low line of credit. Paying your monthly bill on this card will help you build credit, and after 6 months to a year, once you've established a good repayment history and if you don't owe anything on the card, they will return your collateral to you and you can apply for a standard, unsecured card card.

Hi Melvin,

If you're having trouble getting approved for a credit card, I would recommend checking your credit score. You can do this for free with our Credit Concierge service, and signing up won't have a negative impact on your score.

There is a long list of potential reasons for why you are getting denied on your credit card applications. But what it generally boils down to is that you are probably applying for credit cards that require a credit score higher than what you currently have. By checking your credit score, you can see where you fall and then apply for a card that you have a better chance at getting approved for.

I am starting back to Graduate School this fall, I am needing a good card for gas, food, and other expenses while I'm in school. Looking for something that will have good rewards (either cash back or airline miles). I have good/excellent credit score. any advice on a particular card(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Stacy,

If you have a good/excellent credit score then you shouldn't have much of a problem getting approved for any credit card. Since you mentioned gas and food, I would start by looking at the BankAmericard Cash Rewards . This card offers 3% back on gas, 2% back on groceries, and an unlimited 1% back on all other purchases.

I am in need of a credit car to use for mostly automotive repairs. I don't want one that limits me to where i can use it though. I had a goodyear credit card a few years back when i had to get tires suddenly and didn't have the cash to do it so i got it. however it limited me to where i could use it. besides that one time use i have not needed it since, so I don't use credit cards, but recently have begun to realize i should have one for emergencies. I just don't have the cash to cover certain car repairs that I am having. I'd like something with low interest, but also something that's not going to screw me over after one use or lack of use. i have heard for many cards (if not all of them) that having constantly even a small balance is good, but I'd rather just pay off the card and not use it again til I need to again. what's the best card for that?

Hello Tim,

There are a number of credit cards that would be a good fit for what you're looking for. The first card I would consider is the Citi Simplicity. This card has an intro APR of 0% for the first 21 months as well as no annual fee. Furthermore, it is a MasterCard, so you should be able to use it just about anywhere that accepts credit cards.

The notion that carrying a small balance will help your credit score is actually false; though it is a widespread myth. The practice of paying off your balance in full each month, as you mentioned, is hands-down the best way to use a credit card!

By: Steven Martin | Jul 23, 2015

Good Day, In response to your question. In your case a NO ANNUAL FEE card with a low interest rate would be ideal. Since, your currently not interested in points, miles, or other perks. Low interest, and No annual fee would be ideal. To build credit avoid the "store charge cards" and apply for a mainstream credit card such as Chase, Citibank or Bank of America (BofA). Any and all would assist in building credit, offer no annual fee, and be there for emergencies. Then in some time, look and read up on the low rate credit cars such as First command Bank or Simmons First Bank Visa and pay balances in full at months end and your be ahead of the game. Hopefully that helps.

By Pearle M Pearson. Opened a new Visa card account with a limited approved line of credit in the amount of $600. It took only short time to arrive at this .One month upon receiving my statement, balance had jumped from $600 to a $1000. Checking further, I saw where a credit of $400 had been made, and purchase amount of $ 400, causing over limit on which an over limit fee had been added.. Although reluctant to correct the error, they finally did, still believing I had lncurred that charge

Ruby try the Capital One buypower credit card. My credit was poor and I applied and my credit limit is $3000. I also traded my 1998 Mercedes and got a 2012 Ford Fusion and open a Fingerhut acct and I pay them on time and my credit score has grown tremendously. My score was in the low 500's and they gave me a second chance and I will never mess my credit up ever again.

By: Steven Martin | Jul 23, 2015

Years ago, when I was rebuilding, I took out a card with First Premiere Bank. At the time, the fees were high (still are) but worth it if your determined to rebuild. Within 1yr, I started receiving offers from numerous big name credit companies, like Capital One, then Chase etc. Again the fees are high, but with on-time payments of approximately $20 a month ($240yr), your be on your way to rebuilding. PS Search good credit habits in a google search to reinforce proper credit management and behavior. Good Luck.

I am struggling with poor credit and want to start making it better. I work full time and get paid weekly. I I'm able to get the prepaid cards but I would really like the chance to have a real credit card with a small maybe 200 300 dollar limit. so that I could make payments on it regularly and use it regularly and show that I'm doing better and it would help bring my credit score up. I have searched all over the internet and cannot find any card available to me. does anyone know of a car door so I can I can go to and apply and get one? any answers will help. Thank.

Hi Alan,

The best way to build your credit score is to consistently make on time payments and carry as little debt as possible. Prepaid cards will not help you build your credit because they do not report to the credit bureaus. If you're having trouble getting approved for a standard credit card, I would recommend you start with a secured card. A secured card works just like a normal credit card, but they require a refundable security deposit to get approved.

0% Credit Cards & Interest Free Credit Cards

Low interest rate (or 0%) credit cards can save you hundreds of dollars on balance transfers and on routine purchases carried over as credit card balances. Or you may simply want to be rewarded with a preferential interest rate as acknowledgement for good credit history and responsible debt management. Whatever your goals or motivation, zero percent or low interest credit cards can help you maintain the lowest rates available to individuals with excellent to good credit. You can find out more about credit score here.

Keep in mind that there are two main categories of low rate credit cards, namely those that offer a Variable APR and those that give you a Fixed APR.  Just like with variable versus fixed rate mortgages, a fixed rate APR will remain relatively stable through the course of the loan. If your card company decides to raise it – which is somewhat rare – they will first notify you of that change according to Federal law requirements. With a variable rate, your APR is tied to a prevailing rate such as the Prime Interest Rate. If the prime rate increases then your APR will most likely follow in a similar fashion.

Generally speaking, credit card companies and banks will extend either 6 or 21 month offers – within the 0% to 3.99% annual interest rate range. That can generate a considerable discount when normal APRs are averaging around 15% or higher. Once the introductory promotional period expires, the APR on a low interest credit card or interest free credit card may revert to the regular interest rate. Of course the ideal balance is a credit card that offers a great near term rate followed by an attractive, competitively priced low interest rate for the long term.

The interest rate charged on your credit card is widely regarded as the single most important component of your card. That’s because it determines the major cost for you to borrow or roll over balances and pay them off over time instead of all at once or within the same month that you make purchases. That’s why getting a zero percent or low interest credit card can be huge financial boon, no matter what your credit card usage patterns or money management strategies may be.
