I want to apply for a credit card, but want to know if there are any upfront fees associated with application and how much are they?

Hi Ann,

Most credit cards do not have an application fee. In fact, none of the cards you see on this page have a fee simply for applying. Many credit cards come with an annual fee, but that will be clearly stated on the application.

MY STORY,, I currently have a Visa Platnium card and it's maxed out at 9500.00. My min payment is 235.00 and 69.00 go's towards interest per month on the card that's currently charging a est 13% a month. I currently live on about 20000.00 from retirement accounts per year. My credit rating varies from 730-740 ( It use to be about 805 before I went crazy on this card I have now) pretty much because of my credit card being so high. All my payment records are outstanding on time wise. I would love a 21 month card, but what happens if the 9500.00 is not paid off at the end of 21 months. Which card is right for me?

Hi Bing,

If you're paying a 13% interest rate on a $9500 credit card balance, it would definitely be in your best interest to transfer the balance to a low interest credit card and begin paying it off. The Citi Simplicity Card is an excellent option and has 21 months with 0% APR, like you mentioned. If you were to continue making payments of $235 a month, then you will have paid off about half of your balance by the end of your 21 month period without paying a penny in interest.

You shouldn't have any problem getting approved for the card since you're credit score is in the mid 700s. Once the 21 month period is up, you'll pay the ongoing interest rate on the remaining balance; this will be 12.99%-22.99%* APR depending on what you get approved for. If you would like to have the balance totally paid off by the end of the 21 month period, you would need to pay about $450 a month.

I have a combined amount owed from credit cards and car loan, around $5,000. I would like to find a credit card that I could transfer all payments over to one card with one low payment. My problem is,my credit score is in the 600's.Can anyone help?

By: CompareCards | Nov 28, 2015

Hi Marianna,

With a credit score in the 600s, you still may have a few options for a balance transfer credit card. If you're in the upper 600s, you might be able to get approved for the Chase Slate card which offers 0% intro APR for 15 months, no annual fee, and no fee for balance transfers made within the first 60 days. If your credit score is in the lower 600s, the Capital One QuicksilverOne would be a good option to try.

While these cards will be useful in consolidating your credit card debt, it is unlikely that you will be able to transfer the balance of your auto loan onto a credit card. This is because the auto loan is a secured loan, and credit cards are unsecured lines of credit.

I'm looking for a VISA credit card that will be a back up emergency one (will not use often) for myself separate from my husband, but no annual fee and low enough interest because if it truly is an emergency I may have to carry a debt. We discovered how vulnerable I was while my husband had major surgery and rehab and I had access only to my debit and one cc that I ended up maxing out. Any suggestions.

By: CompareCards | Nov 21, 2015

Hi Mary Ann,

I would recommend the BankAmericard Visa Credit Card as a credit card to use for emergencies. It has no annual fee, and it you have excellent credit, you can get approved for an interest rate as low as 10.99%.

By: Fauzi Ajihil Ummar | Nov 25, 2015

I suggest going with Credit Union Visa Platinum option. Those are very low APR credit card if your credit is good to excellent. They are comparable to other credit cards now with better benefits and they do not have annual fees. It is a win win situation.

Try Capital One. I went online and contact the credit bureaus after I made payments then once each collection was paid off I sent a letter of withdrawal to them asking to have that account removed. I had to show them proof I paid off the bill and sometimes it took more then one time to have them do anything. Once a got a few of my report I applied to Capital One and I got .....

Chase credit cards seems to be easy to get as long as you have a good payment record and over 670 score.

0% Credit Cards & Interest Free Credit Cards

Low interest rate (or 0%) credit cards can save you hundreds of dollars on balance transfers and on routine purchases carried over as credit card balances. Or you may simply want to be rewarded with a preferential interest rate as acknowledgement for good credit history and responsible debt management. Whatever your goals or motivation, zero percent or low interest credit cards can help you maintain the lowest rates available to individuals with excellent to good credit. You can find out more about credit score here.

Keep in mind that there are two main categories of low rate credit cards, namely those that offer a Variable APR and those that give you a Fixed APR.  Just like with variable versus fixed rate mortgages, a fixed rate APR will remain relatively stable through the course of the loan. If your card company decides to raise it – which is somewhat rare – they will first notify you of that change according to Federal law requirements. With a variable rate, your APR is tied to a prevailing rate such as the Prime Interest Rate. If the prime rate increases then your APR will most likely follow in a similar fashion.

Generally speaking, credit card companies and banks will extend either 6 or 21 month offers – within the 0% to 3.99% annual interest rate range. That can generate a considerable discount when normal APRs are averaging around 15% or higher. Once the introductory promotional period expires, the APR on a low interest credit card or interest free credit card may revert to the regular interest rate. Of course the ideal balance is a credit card that offers a great near term rate followed by an attractive, competitively priced low interest rate for the long term.

The interest rate charged on your credit card is widely regarded as the single most important component of your card. That’s because it determines the major cost for you to borrow or roll over balances and pay them off over time instead of all at once or within the same month that you make purchases. That’s why getting a zero percent or low interest credit card can be huge financial boon, no matter what your credit card usage patterns or money management strategies may be.
