I am starting a new business and want to get a low interest card for business expenses. Would prefer no fees and cash back rewards. which card would you recommend?

By: CompareCards | May 19, 2016

Hi Kathy,

The Chase Ink Cash for Business is an excellent business credit card that offers low interest and a generous cash back rewards program. With this card, you'll earn 5% cash back on purchases at office supply stores and on cellular phone, landline, internet and cable TV services. You will also receive 2% back at gas stations and restaurants, and 1% on everything else. There is 0% APR for 12 months on purchases and no annual fee.

Hi Patricia,

You may be able to transfer your balance to a low interest credit card depending on you credit. If you have a good credit score, the Chase Slate card would be a great option as it comes with 0% APR for 15 months, no annual fee, and no fee for balance transfers made within the first 60 days.

I owe approx $60K on credit cards - always paid on time and above the minimum. I would like to get a new card for a balance transfer. If I get hit with 20% interest, it will be a problem. If I can get a card to transfer a balance - there's no problem. The debt was built while I was out of work - now I have a business generating enough income to pay $1,200 - $1,500 month....

By: CompareCards | May 16, 2016

Hi Robert,

The balance transfer credit cards that you're able to get approved for will depend on your credit score. A total credit card balance of $60,000 is very high, so you will not be able to transfer all of your balances onto on card at one time. If you have excellent credit, the Barclaycard Ring MasterCard would be a great option for you because it comes with no balance transfer fee and a very low interest rate of 8.25%. If you are approved for this card, you could transfer the maximum amount you are allowed to the lower interest rate, pay it off as quickly as you can, and repeat until you have paid off your debt in full.

This is probably a silly question, but when they say 0% APR for 18 months does this mean that my entire payment each month will go to the principal. Meaning, say I transfer $7,000 from my Citibank Card to the Bank of America Card because I want to get out of debt faster and never use the Bank of America card to purchase anything; will my monthly payments all go to the principal because of the 0% APR ?? I hope that makes sense.

By: CompareCards | May 16, 2016

Hi Janine,

You are exactly right! Balance transfer credit card like the BankAmericard Credit Card are a great way to pay off your debt quickly because every penny of your payments during the introductory period will go towards the principle of your balance. If you wanted to have your balance completely paid off by the end of the intro period with the BankAmericard Credit Card, you would need to make monthly payments of $389 for the first 18 months.

I would like to get a credit card that gives me the maximum miles-per-dollar spent . . . I had heard of a card that gave double miles for every dollar spent, as well as a 50,000 mile signing bonus. BUT, I also heard that some cards require many more "points" than others, when booking a flight . . . can you help me?

By: CompareCards | May 16, 2016

HI Paul,

The Capital One Venture Card may be the card you're referring too. It earns 2x miles for every dollar you spend, no matter what you purchase. These miles can be redeemed for flights on any airline or any other travel expense. The sign up bonus is 40,000 miles after you spend $3,000 in the first 4 months. If you're looking for a 50,000 point sign up bonus, check out the Chase Sapphire Preferred!

It's true that every airline frequent flyer program is different and flights cost different amounts of miles depending on the airlines. But cards like the Capital One Venture and Chase Sapphire Preferred aren't associated with one particular airline, so you can redeem the points and miles for any flight.

Ever since the early 90's when I was a victim of serious credit fraud, I have been paying cash for EVERYTHING, including cars, clothes, etc. I have excellent mrtgage records on 23 different pieces of real estate, which I rented out while I was in graduate school. As a result. my credit score is barely over 600, and I have been making payments early for the past eight months because I have not been using any revolving charge accounts. I am also debt free. Nonetheless, No institution looks beyond one's credit numbers, period! How can I get a credit card from a responsible lender? Richard Patt

With a credit score in the low 600s, you may have a hard time getting approved for an unsecured credit card. One card to try is the Capital One Platinum Credit Card is designed for people trying to build credit. If you use the card responsibly, it should help you raise your credit score very quickly!

I have 750-813 credit score and want to rollover to a credit card balance. Do I need to "unfreeze" my credit bureaus?

By: CompareCards | May 9, 2016

Hi Charles,

Yes, you will need to unfreeze your credit reports if you want to open a new credit card account. If you apply for a credit card while your credit report is frozen, the credit card company will not be able to verify your identity or process your application.

I'm an senior citizen with good credit which cards offers the best benefits for us?

By: CompareCards | May 6, 2016

Hi Marsha,

If you have good credit then you can get approved for a number of great credit card offers. If you're interest in travel rewards, the Capital One Venture is a great choice that won't require you to ever worry about airline blackout dates. For cash back, the Citi Double Cash and Chase Freedom are both great options. If you're simply looking for a low interest rate, the Barclaycard Ring MasterCard has a very low ongoing rate of only 8.25%.

0% Credit Cards & Interest Free Credit Cards

Low interest rate (or 0%) credit cards can save you hundreds of dollars on balance transfers and on routine purchases carried over as credit card balances. Or you may simply want to be rewarded with a preferential interest rate as acknowledgement for good credit history and responsible debt management. Whatever your goals or motivation, zero percent or low interest credit cards can help you maintain the lowest rates available to individuals with excellent to good credit. You can find out more about credit score here.

Keep in mind that there are two main categories of low rate credit cards, namely those that offer a Variable APR and those that give you a Fixed APR.  Just like with variable versus fixed rate mortgages, a fixed rate APR will remain relatively stable through the course of the loan. If your card company decides to raise it – which is somewhat rare – they will first notify you of that change according to Federal law requirements. With a variable rate, your APR is tied to a prevailing rate such as the Prime Interest Rate. If the prime rate increases then your APR will most likely follow in a similar fashion.

Generally speaking, credit card companies and banks will extend either 6 or 21 month offers – within the 0% to 3.99% annual interest rate range. That can generate a considerable discount when normal APRs are averaging around 15% or higher. Once the introductory promotional period expires, the APR on a low interest credit card or interest free credit card may revert to the regular interest rate. Of course the ideal balance is a credit card that offers a great near term rate followed by an attractive, competitively priced low interest rate for the long term.

The interest rate charged on your credit card is widely regarded as the single most important component of your card. That’s because it determines the major cost for you to borrow or roll over balances and pay them off over time instead of all at once or within the same month that you make purchases. That’s why getting a zero percent or low interest credit card can be huge financial boon, no matter what your credit card usage patterns or money management strategies may be.
