Expert Reviews

From the Editorial Team

Those who qualify for Platinum status enjoy a number of elite features and personalized services. There is no pre-set spending limit on the card and you earn a reward point for every dollar spent. There are no blackout dates or seating restrictions when you book for travel, and your points don’t expire. You can transfer points to frequent flier programs or even donate them to charity. Cardholders get free access to airline VIP lounges and the card carries no foreign transaction fees.

Although there is a membership fee, it could be offset depending on the perks you use, cash credits, and special deals you could get just for using the card at hotels, resorts, and airlines. You get up to $200 in airline fee credits each year for incidental fees purchased from your designated airline. Cardholders will also enjoy more than $450 in complimentary benefits for luxury hotel stays booked through the Platinum travel service. Meanwhile you are able to earn as many as 10 points per dollar when you shop at the Amex “Earn Hub.”

Additionally, you have access to a responsive concierge services to assist with dinner reservations and other needs. Card members enjoy 0% APR, but balances must be paid in full at the end of each month.

The Bottom Line

The American Express Platinum card offers a number of features, benefits, and 5-star amenities. Depending on card usage, you could rack up hundreds of dollars worth of VIP perks, credits, and discounts at select hotels, airlines, and other merchants.

The Good

You can earn 40,000 bonus award points after you use the card to spend $3,000 during the first three months of membership. You earn one point for every dollar spent, and the card has no pre-set spending limit. Travel rewards don’t expire and are good on any airline with no seat restrictions or blackout dates. The amenities for cardholders are numerous and top notch.

The Not so Good

You need excellent credit, must pay off your balance in full every month, and there is a $450 annual fee – although you can add up to three other cardholders to your account for $175 a year.

This cards offers numerous benefits that you can enjoy. We have been getting better rates when paying for hotels and resorts. It also gives you some perks when flying, just for using the card! One of the things we use the most is the unlimited WiFi access benefit. These days hotels & resorts charge a fee for WiFi service so this is a great perk!

I use this card enough to justify the annual fee. The rewards are easy to redeem and the benefits of this card are worth much more than the annual fee. I use the Delta SkyClub a lot. Additionally, getting a $100 credit for TSA pre-check is great. I also use the free Regus membership. Most importantly, this card offers me a very sizable credit limit for my business purchases.
