Expert Reviews

From the CompareCards.com Editorial Team

For those who like to keep it simple and steer free of penalties and unexpected rate hikes – while working to pay down balances on other cards – the Citi Simplicity credit card is simply the best. Citibank does advertise its products on CompareCards. You get 0% for 21 months, followed by a variable interest rate of 12.99% - 22.99%. The extra-long 0% intro rate applies to both balance transfers and purchases, which makes the Citi Simplicity card a great card to use for big purchases or to consolidate other credit card debt.

One of the most remarkable features of this card is that there are no late fees or penalty rates charged for late payments. You also get special coverage for lost luggage or trip cancellation and $0 liability on unauthorized charges. It is no wonder that the Citi Simplicity has won rave reviews and is included in many consumer lists of “Top 10” credit cards.

The Bottom Line

The Citi Simplicity Card keeps it simple, streamlining the terms of its cardholder agreement in a way that is probably simpler than any other credit card on the market. Plus there is a full 21 months of 0% APR, no annual fee, and no late penalties.

The Good

The best part about this card is the fantastic 0% APR for a full 21 months, on both balance transfers and purchases, so that’s a generous incentive.

The Not so Good

You’ll need excellent credit to qualify for the Citi Simplicity card, and there is no rewards program attached to it.

Excellent card, Have had Simplicity cards for years, Never had a problem. You need to read and understand credit card offers before you apply for them. This card has saved me lots of interest on my cards for several years. I haven't paid interest on cards for several years. First educate yourself so you wont be complaining afterwards.

I am not impressed by the card. The ploy is if you have "excellent" credit you can use this card to transfer loans or debt onto for 0% APR for 21 months. What you don't find out until you are receiving the card is how low the credit limit is when you have been accepted to receive it. I have been given $6,300 for my credit limit and I have "excellent" credit. Not that $6,300 is anything to turn your back on, but I needed at least a $11,000 credit limit that my other two credit cards easily go past. In the end, it's up to Citi bank to give you a little credit to do what you need to, but it is definitely misleading. You only have 4 months to transfer debt or loans onto your card, and if you go over the 12%-22% interest rates apply. I feel like I wasted a credit check on this card.

When there are no rewards for the card other that the 21 month APR , and also that I heard they put you straight away on payment protection plan with no choice, and it is $1.00 per $100.00 balance. So you would not want to carry any high balance. When I applied (I have great credit) they only gave me a $500.00 credit line. Not worth the free 21% no APR for 21. I will stick with my rewards Citi Bank.. Thanks but no thanks.

I've had citi simplicity for about 4 months now. My credit score was in "good" category with very low annual income $23,000) to show for, I decided to apply anyway and to my surprise, I was approved for $5,000 at 15.99% rate. After getting rejected by BOA twice where I have account with, I must say I'm only grateful to them to have given me a chance to build my credit history.

So very pleased with this card and their excellent customer service. I saved hundreds in interest by consolidating my bills on to this card and then paying them off while being charged 0% interest. Thank You CITI!!!!

Overall it's a great card, 0% APR, late payment forgiveness, good rates, etc. But I have to mark it down a lot because of the shoddy customer support. When you first activate your card, they automatically enroll you in Identity Monitor and some kind of payment protection plan, to help if you lose your job, or get injured or something. Sounds nice, but IM is $13/mo and the protection is, I think, $1 per $100 credit on your account per month. For people like me that plan to max out the card until the end of the intro period, that's no good. When I asked the rep: "Could you please remove me from IM and the protection plan?" they (had to talk to more than one) stated the benefits of the plans again and actually said "so I'm just going to keep you enrolled, ok?" No, not okay. I asked to be removed and you completely ignore me. They also tried to keep me enrolled by promising me a free credit report and said I could cancel after I received it if I wanted, so I figured, ok why not? He neglected to mention that it would be well into the next billing period before I receive my report. Finally I disputed it online, (online support, unlike phone, is excellent) managed to get a refund and removed from the programs. I did get a very detailed credit report out of it, so I'm not too upset, but it was a headache and annoying as hell to be told "no I'm not removing you from our programs even though you asked."

I do not recommend this Citi Simplicity Card at all. For me, the promotional term of 0% APR was for 21 months from February 2013 to October 30, 2014. Thereafter, Citibank jacked my APR to 21.99%. I had a balance of approximately $1,300.00 remaining, in which I paid the majority of the balance ($1,100.00) on November 3, 2014. On December 2, 2014, I paid the remaining balance of $215.00. Twenty days later, I received another statement from Citibank, indicating that I still owe $1.44 as a residual interest. The nerve of Citibank when they sent this statement five days prior to Christmas. Friggin $1.44 to line some CEO's pocket?!? I vented at several customer service representatives of Citibank on Facebook and via telephone conversations, telling them that their CEOs were nothing but modern day Ebenezer Scrooges. It was also an insult to have my APR at 21.99%. They could not compete with my credit union in offering an APR comparable to a 7.79% APR. I got my $1.44 back about two months ago and the teller at the Citibank branch that I went to cash the check spent over 1/2 hour to process the check. Then she wanted me to put my fingerprint on the check, which I felt was totally moronic. Finally, this is not the first time I had a bad experience with Citibank's credit card program. I closed the credit card account and walked away. Citibank, y'all need to stop nickle and dime consumers for the measly amounts of $1.50 or less. By the way, my FICO score is about 760, which means I should have a better APR than 21.99%. I have five other major credit cards and none of them charge me an APR over 17%. The lowest APR I have is 6.74%, followed by 7.79%. Your bank is not consumer friendly.

You know that you had 21 months to pay that off with 0% APR and you waited until it would go up to pay it, right? They didn't "jack it up", you let it go up because you let your money sit there for over 21 months. And then YOU became an Ebeneezer Scrooge complaining about $1.44 that you SHOULD'VE paid. My fiancee and I enjoyed the good laugh though, thanks!

why would you have a balance remaining. the promotion is that you pay it off in time before the interest starts. If you can't do that, don't get promotion, get a low fixed interest card....

All in all this has been a great card. I picked it up about 6 months ago when I wanted to extend my credit and build up my rating a little more. I went with CITI because I already had a card from my credit union and I wanted a second. Not having to pay any annual fees, penalties, or late fees was pretty awesome. The interest rate to start off with is great! (I mean 0%?!?!?) But it does get a little high after that so just be careful not to carry too much of a balance.

Have had this card for a while and I tend to not use it much because of the poor website set up and controls. I find the Citi site very difficult to use and would recommend another company. I've also had problems with incorrect fees and other issues that were not my fault. The 0% intro is good though.
