There’s no pre-set credit limit, so you can use it for purchasing high-priced items or services, or when you’re on an extended trip (especially overseas) and need a card you can rely on and won’t outspend. “No pre-set spending limit,” AmEx p

Because technically it’s a charge card, not a credit card, you’re expected to pay the entire balance every month when your statement arrives.

CARD DESCRIPTION

Since it’s hard to get—and keep—this card may impress those you’re with and/or those you hand the card to, if that’s important to you. However, the price of to carry platinum from Amex is quite high with an annual fee of $450. Purchasing power adjusts with your use of the Card, your payment history, credit record and financial resources known to us, and other factors.

Platinum credit card membership also offers free access to Membership Rewards® points (e.g., good for one round-trip domestic airline ticket if you spend $1,000 within the first three months), Invitation Only® events, worldwide free access to airport clubs and concierge service, and other perks. There’s no mention of an APR in the AmEx promotion copy, but no doubt there is one (and it may be high) should you fail to pay the entire balance. With no pre-set limit, it’s extremely important to protect against unauthorized use—and also against authorized use by those who don’t necessarily check their statements on a regular basis.

This card may be ideal for business use by those who travel extensively or often pick up the tab for expensive dinners, tickets to sporting events, etc., and who don’t want to be affected by pre-set spending limits as with regular cards.
