For years, the The Platinum Card® from American Express occupied a special spot on the high end of reward credit cards. Today, it has many competitors but it has continued to evolve and offer more perks and benefits than ever before, most notably for the frequent traveler. While it would be possible to write a book detailing all of this card's benefits, here are the majority of the ones that cardholders are most likely to use:
The Platinum card offers a $200 annual airline fee credit that can be used to pay for incidental fees such as change fees, checked baggage fees, seat selection fees, and charges for in-flight food and beverages. To use this benefit, you must first select an airline to apply it to.
In addition, this card offers a $100 fee credit towards the application fee of the Global Entry program, which includes expedited processing when arriving in the United States, as well as access to the TSA's PreCheck program for domestic security. Alternatively, you can use the fee credit towards the $85 application fee for PreCheck by itself, or to renew your membership in either program. These handy fee credits can save cardholders hundred of dollars and definitely help justify the cost of the $550 annual fee.
Platinum cardholders enjoy complimentary access to over 1,000 airport lounges, including American Express's new Centurion Lounge network, the Delta Sky Clubs, and the Airspace Lounge network. In addition, you also have access to the Priority Pass Select lounge network which offers most of its lounges overseas.
American Express Platinum cardholders are entitled to elite status with several different travel providers upon request, including Gold status with both the Hilton HHonors and Starwood Preferred Guest hotel programs. In addition, The Platinum Card® from American Express offers elite status in the following rental car programs: Avis Preferred Club, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards and National Emerald Club Executive.
American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts and The Hotel Collection
These programs allow cardholders to receive room upgrades, stay credits, and welcome gifts when booking at least two consecutive nights in participating hotels. To be eligible for these benefits, you must book your stay through American Express Travel Services using your card.
International Airline Program
Anytime you purchase a qualifying refundable business or first class ticket for international air travel with your card on over 25 participating airlines, you can receive an additional ticket for a companion. However, you will have to pay any carrier imposed fuel surcharges as well as a non-refundable American Express service fee of $39 (per ticket), which applies to each purchase and itinerary change. Unfortunately, the qualifying refundable tickets will cost substantially more than a non-refundable one.
Travel insurance and purchase protection
This card comes with a wide range of travel insurance policies including car rental insurance, premium roadside assistance, baggage insurance, and travel accident insurance. Purchase protection policies include coverage against accidental damage, theft, or loss within 90 days of purchase. In addition, purchases are covered for 90 days by their return protection policy and extended warranty coverage that adds a year to your manufacturer's warranty.
Cardholders receive access to Wifi in the Boingo network, which includes millions of hotspots.
The American Express Platinum concierge service is available 24/7 to assist you in virtually any way possible. You can contact the Concierge to get directions, make dining reservations, book travel, or to have a gift purchased and delivered.
Particularly if you're a frequent traveler, The Platinum Card® from American Express is a card that has been in our favor for years, and contiues to prove itself a great choice for those seeking a premium credit card.
